We already are, Ian. How much do you suppose the fine would be if I were to drive along the hard shoulder of a motorway because my Satnav had told me to? Plus a sackful of penalty points. Fifty quid was getting off lightly.  :police:

The b*ggers ignore traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, one-way streets and 'no cycling' signs; they cut in front of you in moving traffic, and ride on footpaths like they have an exclusive right to be there. I'm afraid none of them seem to realize that they are no match for two tons of fast-moving metal, yet if I hit one through no fault of my own then it would be me that carried the blame for the rest of my life.
Have you ever seen a sign that says "Think Car"? No - there would be absolutely no point to it because most cyclists don't read road signs. They are selfish and stupid - especially the one in this story.  >>:-(

I feel everyone has the hump because the cyclist was probably the fastest moving object on that section of the M25 at the time! What with having his own cycle lane and all :}

some of them on here have been doing this for years - remote controlled ships - they are on shore - and they still crash them  {-)

Security? What happens if those with the knowledge to over-ride the remote control get aboard? Hijack for ransom? Use a tanker as an anti-environment weapon or worse?  Shipowners would gladly increase their profits by getting rid of crews but even they would give this a wide berth and carry on paying peanuts to Third-World crews.

The electric it is the future

  No Gazou, only A future, they still need a system (like toy boats) to charge the battery. Don't forget gas and Hydrogen as power sources.

This would be easier to do with conventional ships.
Those who wanted to do it would be very sophisticated. The real issue today is pirates from poor nations who are not sophisticated.

An unmanned vessel would not need decks or railings or grapling hook friendly superstucture. The control systems and bridge could be sealed in an armoured box, that would only need to be opened for maintenance or if a pilot is required.

Like autonomous cars, I think this is a feasible future. People say they don't want to give up control, but people also want to use mobile devices and to other things when they drive. Imagine a long journey, where you can just sit back and watch a movie, in your own wheeled box.
There will always be arguements about what happens if the system fails, you have fail safes. Even if the fail safes fail, it will still be safer than human error.
One of the issues with speeding is that often people do not want to be the slow driver, and yet this is what happens in traffic. When we are all the slow driver we don't care as much. When were are cut up or harrassed by other drivers we can react and the potential for errors increases. With automated systems you illiminate selfish drivers and the reactions they can cause.

Yes there will be issues with implementing any automated system, some of these are man-machine issues, but they are not insumountable. Think of all the things we already do that are automated.
