That's an interesting article Martin - hope the developers are / have built in something to guard against the hacking fraternity. Imagine stuff like that being turned against the owners. :o

Absolutely disgraceful and disgusting, not only the Dutch ships missing but three British (Exeter, Encounter and Electra) and an American too! >:-o <:(
Earlier reports from the Prince of Wales and Repulse wrecks show signs of disturbances too. :((

Just remember......when you next buy your Hyundai, Chevrolet matiz and anything built out that way...........just where the metals to build it, might have come from.

I am saddened that countries will accept such metal from these people who without a scruple to their name really haven't a clue as to the upset they are causing people.
Real life is so cheap out there, so any thought as to the dead from long gone wars is to them, as remote as flying to the moon, I'm sad to say.

How did they do it? It must have been a huge operation and is the steel worth that much?

In some ways, I'm impressed!

and is the steel worth that much?

I read in a book once about the salvage of the wrecks of Scapa Flow that all steel sunk below salt water pre the "modern nuclear age" and higher radiation pollution than pre age where natural radiation was around is apparently worth much more per ton than post nuke age.

Of course - didn't think of that. In that case, it's VERY valuable.

hi there

Watching a programme the other night on TV it was either Discovery/History Channel ??  and it was about the Odyssey Marine Exploration Team - no doubt you will have seen these - I think they do a brilliant programme and a good job of protecting wrecks and also salvaging valuable stuff.  This particular time they were on about lead ingots which they were salvaging from an unknown wreck at the time - they couldn't quite establish when the ship/wreck was sunk.   They took several ingots to be analysed for radiation and stuff - and as has been said in a previous thread - the lower radiation in the metal the more valuable the material is and it turns out the lead was quite valuable.

Just going back to the original topic - how on earth does one hide a salvage operation - to remove something like the remains of HMS Exeter - surely there must be some evidence on the sea bed and surely there are some satellite surveillance available - because surely they would know when someone has done something like this - someone always sees it.

As a thought - can you recall when the Americans tried to lift that Russian submarine? What they did to salvage that on the QT.

I think  I read the same book Jim. I particularly remember the comment about pre-nuclear, uncontaminated steel from the German Fleet being desirable - particularly in the medical machinery industry where nuclear medicine required metals for X-Ray, scanners etc, which would be easier to calbrate if unexposed to atmospheric radiation. Makes sense!

The lower 'self radiation' of pre-nuclear steel will also make the scanner much more sensitive by lowering the noise floor considerably.

The wreck of HMS Indefatigable sunk at Jutland has been pretty much mined out using explosives. This was believed to have been done by German salvors between the wars.

Sad/disgusting? yes. Inevitable in this day and age? yes.

I read that they are using explosives, disguised as fishing (yes fishing with explosives is still going on), to break up the wreck. Then grappling hooks are dropped to haul up whatever they can hook.
As for value, phosphor bronze (props and engine bits) is worth about GBP 2000 per ton.

As for countries knowing about this, probably not. It is small fishing boats who probably sell scrap locally, and it finds its way up the chain. No way for the smelter to suspect anything more odd than normal, until now that is; with the news stories. Once smelted, who knows the origins?

....."phosphor bronze (props and engine bits)"

TT....the bronze/brass [red metal] components are far more diverse throughout Naval vessels ......potable water, cooling water, waste & sewage pipe work, hydraulic oil fluid systems, air or pneumatic systems....etc

The brew in the melt is to the highest metallurgical standard....yes 'Admiralty Brass with 1% Sn'

BBC News:  Royal Navy 'woefully low' on warships.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-38044967

Should we be surprised?  This has been known for many years, and getting worse.
Frigates being replaced by a lesser number.  Type 45 engines must be replaced.  How do we even adequately escort our two new aircraft carriers?

Even Australia has more warships than Britain  :D

At least some justice in the world- pity about the poor research into the Hermes, since when was she a battlecruiser?!
