I currently work a bit south of Versailles and trvelled back today after a week-off home in Inverness.  Transfering on the train at Saint Michel is my normal route on the RER so I stepped out to have a look at the cathederal for a few mins.  Not much to see really.  Wouldn't think anything happened from the front.  Couldn't get near it of course, lots of barriers and Police.

It really got me on every news story I saw, not one anchorman/woman or reporter confirmed nobody was hurt.  That should have been their opening statements every time.  I also said to myself it's quite grotesque how many folk are sleeping rough on the street, so many people everywhere in the world can't feed themselves but as soon as an old building catches fire there's hundreds of millions in donations appear within hours?  Something very sad about that to me.

From the USA, one of the eight surviving Big Boy locomotives has been restored and returned to steam.

Just for interest, Hornby are to launch a 1:87 scale version of this locomotive under their Rivarossi label. The model will depict the restored version and is available to pre-order at a cost of £384.99. The model is scheduled for release in Aug 19 and will measure 475mm (nearly 19 inches) in length !

I'm not too sure 'launch' is the correct word in that instance. The original, pre-Hornby Rivarossi, had UP Big Boys in their HO and N gauge ranges back in the 60s , so it's probably more a re-launch.

They were very good models back then, except possibly for the motor in the N gauge version (I have a few of those and they self destruct quite often....) so I hope Hornby re-motor them in the new version.

Sad news about paddle steamer Waverley. The problems with the boilers are worse than expected and she will not sail again in 2019.

That would be iconic and amazing. I guess this is just some sort of unsolicited proposal? It is just too good to be an actual thing, call me a cynic!!

Since it has a stone ceiling (which saved the building) it would only be seen at night.  A much cheaper way would be to have a proper roof that can be illuminated externally like the Sydney Opera House.

Fake news - just like the alleged moon landings. I reckon that two alternative endings were filmed for transmission to the UK and NZ. In the other one Ben Stokes' dive for the crease deflected that throw-in onto his stumps and he ran himself out.  O0
I'll wait for the BBC News tomorrow to see the real version.... {-)

Just shows how sports committees compose rules assuming they'll never, ever, ever come into use <*<

I agree, although I thought that umpires at that level would know all the rules, however obscure - obviously not.
It's a shame such a great match has ended in controversy, but I do think that England should consider themselves lucky to have won, under the circumstances. New Zealand, on the other hand, were desperately unlucky to lose, and must be feeling sick, as I'm sure England would have been were the situation reversed. The Australians can console themselves that they beat both England and the Kiwis comprehensively during the tournament, but fell at the last hurdle when England beat us just as comprehensively.

It will be interesting to see what the ICC has to say, if anything, regarding the on field howler by the umpires. However, nothing is going to change the result, and England are the World Cup Champions.

The ICC have said that they employ the umpires to make on-field decisons and that's the way it is - for better or otherwise. I agree. There are dark mutterings from the usual Internet trolls about Australians being sore losers as the retired umpire who has caused the fuss is an Australian. I guess that idiots stirring up the sh mud is the way the world has gone in recent years. It's just not cricket, is it?
Kane Wiliamson has risen above this magnificently by saying that England played the better cricket throughout the tournament and were worthy winners. Give that man  a medal.
