SS Richard Montgomery
« Reply #1656 on: August 05, 2020, 07:39:44 pm »

The terrible explosion in the docks at Beirut made me ponder one point . The devastation caused by 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate exploding brings to mind the matter that the residents of Sheerness in Kent and to a lesser extent the Isle of Sheppey and even Southend do not dwell on.  Just off the coast , a few yards away from the main shipping lane on the Nore mudbank lies the sunken wreck of the liberty ship SS Richard Montgomery.  She sunk in 1944 with 6,000 tons of high grade munitions on board, although over the years much was removed they recon 1,500 tons considered too dangerous to touch still remain in an increasingly parlous condition . When we used to visit Sheerness years ago my Uncle used to say that if that lot went off Sheerness would cease to exist , I thought a bit of a bang yes, but you must be exaggerating.  Perhaps he was not .  Doubtless that's why their house prices are lower.

Beirut was a surface explosion - looking akin to a nuke going off, the liberty ship is below the surface, would this dampen the effect as far as the shock wave - its the other wave that might be more dangerous - the tsunami that would follow.

Yes I suppose best case scenario would be that the Isle of Sheppey and everything on it got painted Thames Estuary mud brown.

Last time I went to Sheppey it was pretty mud coloured already. Leysdown-on-Sea, are they extracting the Michael or what. It makes Clacton look posh.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency surveys of the wreck can be seen here:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-ss-richard-montgomery-information-and-survey-reports

It's amazing how much detail the scans can pick up.

One of the former RN Castle class corvettes(?) either Dumbarton Castle or Leeds Castle, was along side when the blast happened, at least four of her crew were killed.

What blast LB? The Richard Montgomery went aground and broke in half. There was no explosion.

We  have  several underground fuel tanks (Aviation) 1/2 mile from us which serves Heathrow. It is located just outside Bristol. There is a Mobile Home site and houses right beside it. Well thought out even if the tanks only ruptured  a couple of 100 yard steep slope down to the Severn Estuary

I used to pass 100 yards off the Montgomery wreck regularly while carrying coal to Kingsnorth Power Station and later taking cars to Chatham. Always had my fingers crossed which worked obviously. Our first house was in Elton, Cheshire, downwind of Associated Octel, Stanlow Refinery, something else and the fertiliser factory. Everyone was scared of the first three but nobody worried about the fertiliser factory. If Stanlow has gone up the fertiliser factory would blow the fire out!
Jerry.

Not in the newws as such - but on TV recently, I was watching megamovers on Forces TV, wher they lifted the Wasa from the sea bed, they initially planned to refloat her and tow her then to the dock, only issue was that the iron bolts had rusted away, though to their surprise she remained together and though not as such refloated enough water was removed to get her to where they wanted, by lifting and the moving her till they could ground her again.

They used a 6" steel cable and they had visions of this just slicing through the hull.

Nowadays they would have done it slightly different using hydraulic jacks instead of the submerging pontoons.

THE INCREDIBLE HULKS

It used to be "Anyone for a trip around the harbour ?"    Now the south coast attraction is "Anyone for a trip around the abandoned cruise fleet ?"   The Mary Celeste goes mega,

Her Majesty has confirmed the posthumous award of the Victoria Cross to a young Australian Naval [Ordinary Seaman] Teddy Sheeans

This is after a long and protracted case for the Award, earlier denied and lost by various Australian Government reviews

"The Defence Honours and Awards Appeals Tribunal in May recommended Ordinary Seaman Sheean be awarded a VC after a 2019 inquiry
The federal government refused the recommendation."

I know the weather has been terrible for a lot of folk -we seemed to have missed it completely up here in Inverness last night but thank the lord or whatever, there doesn't seem to be more people hurt in this accident.  As someone who went all the way to Paris and back recently (for work and back to my apartment -not a holiday!!) by train without a single glitch either way, my thoughts are with everyone affected.
