It's not altogether clear exactly where in the harbour she was docking but you can see that the paddles are going ahead right up to the collision and only went into full speed astern immediately afterwards.

Perhaps some confusion here? The video referenced is from 2017 when Waverley tried to push Bute further up the Clyde.

Today is the anniversary of the Airborne Kiel canal disaster in 1974 . IV and XV para were involved in a night drop during a Nato exercise when 15 men landed in the canal and 6 drowned.

Fortunately they are a thing of the past. Many that pass P company these days have a very long wait to train for their wings never mind large airborne exercises. I joined in 78 and they had already removed the night drop from qualification but I did a balloon night drop on Altcar beach only because it got dark early  %%  and they had chutes left to use up.

I doubt they roman candled. What usually happens is entanglement and one usually lands upside down. This happened to my mate on our course at Brize in 78. He was discharged because of his back injury. Also happened to Prince Charles same year but without injury.

The Hercules slipstream brings port and starboard sticks together behind the aircraft which is why the RAF dispatchers are critical to time them out the doors alternately.

[/size]Yes but we always called a non-inflated canopy a Roman Candle. Two guys entangled under 2 non-inflated canopies looking like a large green silk sausage suffering from the effects of gravity would still count I would have thought.

Fair call
Difficult at night as the first thing after check canopy is steer away but if you canít see everyone itís down to luck.
You can also collapse your canopy by drifting directly over another parachute then itís a race to the ground. I never witnessed this but was warned of the potential hazard

From what I recall from 'chit-chat' with some of the 20 odd lads 'with ankles' who came to us in casualty that night the gist of what happened was:

One guy who had 'Roman Candled' hit the top of the others canopy quite hard collapsing it too, then slid down & got tangled in his lines above him. Too dark & too low to work out what to do so gravity won. Sad event all round.

All I know for sure is that it was the busiest night in casualty I had in 12 years at military hospitals. No one had written SOP's to cover that, we had to make it up as we went along. Even the Major Accident Plan didn't cover that number coming to us, it was written around us sending teams out to Aid the Civil Power. No use at all. As a humble RAMC Cpl I did get at least a CO's Commendation from an RAF Air Cdre, still got it somewhere, in the loft probably.

Hi all, I note that President Putin has laid claim to the planet Venus!  Rather a bold move I thought but that's the Russians for you.

I hope he can launder enough rubels into dollars to fund a Royal Visit for himself and visit his 'new territory'.  I bielive it is about Gas Mark 25 there and on the surface like being under 3000 feet of water.  Maybe he could include a certain American gentleman as a guest.  Just tell him its a cure for the Covid19 but not to stop the gargling!
Then of course there is.........  No I will stop there.

Roy

I think the Mekon and the Treens might have a word or two to say about that.  %%
Of course Putin could always take Dan Dare with him.
