Having read a bit about the 5 Sullivan boys I am not sure if I would name a ship after them.   Bunch of hooligans by all accounts.   Glorified by U.S. Navy to help enlistment after the Navy stuffed up.  >>:-(

Looking at the article in tinyurl (the US manufacturer has identified the owner), and the other news above, it may well be that the US or another NATO ally is playing with floating drones to spot Russian subs. A bit like remote sensing.

My former squadron apologises for the fuse not being set correctly, the Armourers from 1944/5 are being retrained to prevent this from happening again! %) ;)

When I was seconded to the Kenyan Armed Forces I had the job of getting rid of 8 or 9 unexploded RAF 250 lb bombs which had been dropped during the Mau Mau  troubles.   Despite being very well tamped, they made lovely circles in the Bamboo plantations.   Pete

Dear Nicks former Squadron.

We appreciate their efforts on retraining their armourers and reccomend that they use more Duct tape and Milliput in the future.

Kindest regards, Reassured of Crewkerne.

Forgive me but on seeing this in the local news I had one immediate question (I think it safe to assume HOW it got there)......  but NO mention of WHY??????????  I continually lose my faith in news reporting these days...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-54590948

Rather ironically I moved up here to Inverness in the first place to essentilly work on a long gone re-purposed airstrip and Catalina base!

...Fascinating!  A quick google search reveals a lot bigger than I expected from the pic, but not so surprising given the task.  But the second submerisble part beneath also I would never have guessed.

Very interesting thanks.

We used to moor up in Los Angeles by a bridge. One of these PBYs? Used to land on the water right next to us then put the wheels down and taxi up a slipway to do whatever then reverse the process and fly off again.

There are posts on another forum apparently showing Chinook helicopters lowering fast RIBs near the tanker. Presumably SBS from Poole HQ.
