The level of compression of the cars at the bottom of the pile, in the MV Golden Ray wreck, is quite remarkable.

Re: In the News !!! K&S brass strips discontinued.
« Reply #1778 on: December 16, 2020, 04:18:42 pm »

Fellow modellers will no doubt by now be noticing that many brass strips are becoming hard if not impossible to find. This appears to be due to discontinuation by K&S. I just googled the possible reason for the shortage and found this on another forum from Aug 2019

Quote
They are no longer making
1/64" x 1/32" brass strips
1/64" x 1/16" strips
1/64" x 3/32" strips
1/64" x 1/8" strips

New video of the crane failure incident:
https://youtu.be/o1s79Uk10TA

True.....  but a bit unusual for a brand new crane to fail at just over half the rated load?!?!!!!!   {:-{

Edit - now appears to be a hook failure .....

"The crane’s twin boom and jib appears to have flipped over the rear while lifting a test load at the Liebherr yard in Rostock. We are told that the incident was caused by the failure of a wire rope during an overload test, but this has not yet been confirmed. The collapse was captured on video which you can see below.

Update:
We have now learnt that it was not a rope that failed, but the hook block - the four leg hook broke free of the neck/shaft. The sudden release of the heavy test load caused the boom to catapult back over the rear of the crane and crumple."

I saw this video a few days ago - what puzzles me is that I would have thought such a critical test would have been covered in video cameras at all points and at all angles - yet here is more 'potato-cam' footage that looks like it's from a random port security camera.   %)

Why?    The hook failed - everything else was a predictable result - I'm actually impressed it behaved as well as it did, considering the unbelievable forces involved.    If the jib or any other engineered parts had failed, I'd understand the embarrassment.

He is still there at 0915 this morning with 4 tugs in attendance

With no tides and the weight of a super large container ship she might take a bit of shifting. The BBC is reporting multiple days.

Here is one for our ex-Masters or Naval Architects ....so a question   ......from left of centre or out of the box

If this ship is some 190,000 DWT......would she not carry ~~ 30,000 to 40,000 tonnes of ballast when traversing the seas as empty/light ship?

So could consideration be made in flooding ballast tanks, aft of the theoretical midships balance point, transfering the load to aft & elevate the bow out of the sandbank?...

Most of the computer-generated imagery suggests both bow & stern are locked in opposite banks, however satilite images suggest it is the bow only that is bogged, with the stern in free water  %)

Surely with NaviCAD and Systems or Programs more sophisticated could analyse firstly the suitability of the transfer of stresses and secondly if this was achievable?....or has this been effected?

A couple of fire trucks and jet wash the underwater material out of the way to remove the suction.

At 250 metres the channel is still too narrow, they needed it to be at least double that so the ships can U turn if needed to, in the picture - is it beached up as well as the water line seems quite high considering how many containers are on her.

The Guardian this morning has a story that sets new heights for stupidity (possibly). It is asking its readers to suggest how the ship might be refloated.

Derek, the canal bank slopes underwater so the stern is also firmly aground although you cannot see it. So ballasting the stern section would not be effective.

Egypt is not exactly known for its efficiency but one would have thought they would have contingency plans of some sort for this type of situation. Aparently Smit Salvage are now on the scene and they have enormous experience.

It will be interesting to see what they do now.

Thanks Colin........my words were really intended to be a little tongue in cheek...........

Smit have apparently subcontracted another Dutch group....Boskalis?, a specialist dredging company to assist

The Suez Authority will have little room to maneuver [no pun intended], as the multi million $ insurance claims pile on top of each other, this being over and above the loss of revenue to the Egyptian coffers for Transit Feess

The Convention of International Marine Law will be tested .....by satute, even though a requirement may be mandatory for a Pilot to execute his skills in pilotage through certain waterways, in the event of incident, the final responsibility reverts back to the Captain of the vessel  O0

But be rest assured, the Insurance Brokers will still be able to buy a new 3 Piece Pin Striped suit each year, as with all insurance claims....ultimately it is you and I who pay for the costs in our increased home & car insurances

Boskalis own Smit towage.....

Perhaps this incident will now encourage the Suez authorities to insist that ships of this size must now have a tug attached aft, even forward as well, when transiting the canal in future, as oil tankers are required to do when in narrow waterways.

Of course LB :-)) ........a job for the Bean Counters

A 2021 mathematical model incident examination will be able to prove that mandating a Tug [design & power to be defined] hard wired Fwd & Aft to any vessel of XYZ Class when transiting critical passages of the Seuz waterways would be of minuscule cost impost per tranit, compared to the potential costs as incurred by the March 2021 Everier Greenish incident

Always easy in hindsight, but who signed off on those Complex Risk Assessment studies that were submitted not only to the Egyptian Authorities, but also to the World Body of Mercantile Marine Underwriters during the proposals in allowing vessels of increased size & displacement etc to transit these passages ?
