Is this the original channel but widened? or is a completely new channel, and if it is a completely new channel why is the old channel not being a north or southbound channel and this the opposite direction.

Have they increased the lock network as well to accommodate these bigger vessels

It is the original channel.

The Suez canal doesn't need locks as it is basically a ditch between the Red Sea and the Med which have the same sea levels.

yea, just realized I was thinking of the wrong channel - its the panama with locks, forgot its a quick transit between port siad and the suez.

Having looked at the maps, the dual lane is only in the middle bit, now you can see why the expected increase in revenue is not as expected

Part of the Suez Canal is twin channel (post Ferdinand de Lesseps ) but that is further north. Where the bungage has occurred is just north of Suez where it is only single channel .   Perhaps a large dose of syrup of figs would flush it out.

As Colin suggests, the original canal system was little more than a long ditch between two pools of water O0

I had read many years ago, every second vessel, transiting the canal was a CSSBD [cutter sucker sand blowing dredge.......

[most important task of the SCA was to ensure they don't blow the wet sand on the Camels or sink the ancient sail-powered Feluccas :embarrassed:

Well, the days of Persons parading and pouncing around in powered Wigs  {-)  presenting their version of the Law of abandoned ships & the cargo of Tea....together with the floggings of the guilty in the back Rooms of The Olde Baley are all a figment of the past

So in this case, I believe the persons attempting to refloat [get unstuck]  the Everier Greenish vessel are contractors to the owners, not contractors to Mercenaries of the sea as this vessel had not been abandoned 8)

Yo,Ho,Ho, but I understood that one of the main components of salvage was who bore the risk if the op went pear-shaped. Contractors bear that in mind all the time.

I am sure left of centre considerations....such as the MV Tricolor ship salvage solution   <*<  would still be on the Drawing boards now

Also an interesting article in the FT about the possibly less obvious issues of driving a very large ship through a small channel.

Greg

Edit - sorry, it seems you have to register to read that.  It is basically a discussion of the hydrodynamic forces operating on a hull when it moves in close proximity to the bottom and/or the bank. It suggests that with a strong wind on the port beam, the ship was compensating by steering left.  There was a lull in the wind which caused the ship to turn towards the port bank. The hydrodynamic forces then "sucked" the stern in and pushed the bow away, causing the resultant bump.

These are so funny but on a more serious note things may become in short supply. Evergreen are going to get a huge bill for this lot. On the lunch time news more tugs on the way world trade will be disrupted for many weeks.

Sky news update - they've managed to free up the prop and rudder to operational status.

According to the report I read, the lorry and the ship are owned by different companies despite both showing 'Evergreen' on their sides. So probably both companies will get large bills.
Either way it will end up with supply disruption for many people.
It's a crazy world!!

If there was any 'hint' of damage to her steering gear  >>:-( , would the vessel not lose Insurance Classification under the Underwriters [Lloyds or ??? etc]

This would then dictate a tow [aided/unaided] to the nearest Dockyard, which would obviously be her intended discharge Port of Rotterdam...does Rotterdam have the [400+m} Dock Capacity? or would this need to dock in Hamburg?

Following on, if the rudder was embedded, did the propeller suffer Bronze stress?.....again, it is doubtful any Marine Classification [DNV?] could provide a clean bill of health, so adding to the possibility of an aided tow

Those murky sandy Egyptian waters get a little more clouded by the day  :embarrassed:

And good morning to you Sandy Campbell  ;)
