Back in the day my son and I enrolled in an MYA sailing course and we crossed the channel at night Falmouth to Cherbourg.  That was a frightening journey most of the ships are on automatic and so quiet they are just suddenly there!

To do it in a dinghy beggars belief but many do.  I agree they are jumping the queue to get to the UK and this is one of the very expensive places to become a citizen.  I believe it is about £50K.

Hi Jaymac I think I did that journey in that boat!  I was in the RAF and went Harwich to the Hook in December 1957.  It was blowing a gale.  I thought about it and decided to use the chin strap on my flat hat to hold it on.  I was one of the few who did not loose his hat that morning, they were all floating out to sea.

I did a few school trips to the Continent in the 50's from Dover to Calais.   Nothing as bad as Bay of Biscay on our journey to Oz.   So glad they built the Chunnel.

Hi I have re-read this and am still confused between Evergreen and Ever Ace and when they docked.
Roy

Evergreen marine is the operating company.

Ever GIVEN is the ship that blocked the suez earlier this year and docked last month - finally.

Ever ACE is this new ship with the capacity to hold 28 more containers than a similar ship, first of 12.

Clearly a publicity stunt to have all your own containers on its first voyage, I wonder where the extra 28 containers are placed, as there seems to be several empty spaces along the edges  %)

Hi Jaymac, I got travelling from Geilenkirchen (near Aachen) to London down to a fine art.  Being in the Forces travel was highly discounted in Europe the most expensive was Dover to London.  Door to door 12 hours.
I am afraid the funding of it might be regarded with some concern!  I used to play cards gambling poker, brag etc.  The proceeds paid for all my travel for 2 years.  But for the last 3 months I got hooked on Bridge.

Completely stopped gambling (never placed a bet since).  30 years ago took it up with more time to spare and ended up as a Tournament Director.  Like being a referee at a childrens competition, yes, the bridge players are like that!  I suppose there are few exceptions but not many.

Regards

Jeez Roy Geilenkirchen that's practically in Belgium we were twixt Hannover / Hamburg about 20 mls from Belsen.12 hours my final trip home '67 took from an Etd of 0600 hrs at Hannover to landing around 2200hrs that night and then we were being diverted to Birmingham but luckily changed back to Heathrow.
Still recall  the 13+ wait agony with a massive hangover from my farewell do

What a Monster! - https://youtu.be/cgzIXZoPeRE

What is the commercial life of a container ship at the moment, 3-5 years?
I seem to remember reading something about nearly new ships being scrapped as they had been superseded by more efficient newer ships. Cheaper to buy and run a new ship than continue to run less efficient ships.

It was even bigger than the Newcastle earthquake of December 1989, which was 5.4 magnitude. That one killed 13 people, and injured another 160, while causing considerable damage. Fortunately, no one died in the Melbourne quake.

Just another natural disaster.   We were expecting something since the Prime Minister went overseas.  :embarrassed:
Just as well we are not on Mars, their 4.1 quake on 18 Sept. lasted an hour and a half!

Hi all just come across an amusing quote.
To be completely cured of newspapers, spend a year of reading the previous week's newspapers.  This was from a journalist!

Hi all, I watched "How to build a submarine". last night.  I thought the title was a bit of an exageration and to be honest why were we following a pretty young lady apprentice?  Why was a simple bit of wiring up given such prominence?  Was the programme filmed all that long ago that the makers were still in the scenario of "whats a pretty young thing doing in this technical world?"
The Admiral did not impress either rather mild mouthed words about a project 4 years late but maybe that is the norm?

But I now know a lot about frying chips, were everyone sleeps and eats and how for some reason no one thought to check whether the lock gates still worked after 20 years out of use?
Oh dear it reminds me of watching a similar programme on what amounted to building a miniature submarine for searching shallow waters.  They would have been better off buying a model kit and seeing how it was done in the local lake!
Nobody was expecting secrets to be laid bare, I think it revealed more about the film makers' general level of ignorance rather than a documentary on submarines.

The submarines are supposed to be silent and unobserved, pretty much my view of this programme.

You can't overburden the great unwashed with too much information. Mother of one of the crew on an  "S" boat asked "How do you see out? There's no windows" The last two submarine programmes were quite laughable if your in the know BUT make good TV viewing. From memory, last nights repeat was building the "A" boats? Hope the pretty apprentice wasn't responsible for wiring the intercom.
