Nothing like as much as the bits of HS2 that are likely to be cancelled and then there is the £5.5 billion on the Ajax armoured car that doesn't work & is likely to be scrapped.

There is huge public waste everywhere caused by inefficiency and failure to use joined up thinking. The NHS is a dreadful example. I am now blind in one eye following cessation of treatment that left me with some useful vision in it. The 8 weekly injections were costing the local NHS trust around £800 each. A court case against the suppliers three years ago cleared the way for the NHS to use an alternative at around £30 a time (from the same pharma firm) but hardly any NHS trusts have taken advantage of it. Medications are prescribed like sweeties irrespective of cost and if you have repeat prescriptions they are rarely reviewed to check if they are still necessary. It's not a question of cutting budgets but in improving management competence, sharing good practice and attention to detail but all the systems seem geared to prevent that happening.

The Ajax tank is a classic example of throwing good money after bad in the hope that somehow the situation can be retrieved. A proper engineering evaluation might have determined the the design was a lost cause but there would have been too much egg on face in high quarters so the project has been blindly continued. Many, many other examples can be cited and we are all individually literally the poorer for it. The'National Yacht' was an obvious turkey right from the start making no sense whatsoever in today's world. Boris Johnson just wanted an opportunity to swan around the world grandstanding.

It's always been so and those that are old enough will remember industry guru's such as John Harvey-Jones in the early '90's followed by Jerry or Gerry, whose surname I forget, going in with proper management outlook and questioning just how money was spent.The answer from the mandarins then was "Lessons will be learnt" as it is now.

  The news I heard was that cancelling the new Royal Boaty would enable them to spend the allocated money on building a specialist vessel to guard the sea bed communication cables in the north sea .   I presume there is no great urgency in this.

Nice bit of footage Colin - I was curious to know why the radar was going ninety to the dozen when she came away from her berth, until I realised it was fast forward footage  :embarrassed:

Some nice footage of other vessels going about and of course the "xxxxx" taking a dive, as if it saw what was coming  {-)

Edit : the system didn't like my bird name S h a g

Cheers,

I didn't know it was called Quebec House, I was trying to look it up without much success. Thanks for the link, it cerainly has an interesting history. I've seen it often enough when passing through Portsmouth entrance.

I remember the Butcher boats harbour tours in their little blue open boats passing the building and hearing the phrase "And on your right, the white building is Quebec House. One of the oldest..." etc. You loose some of the charm with the bigger Solent Cruise vessels.

Just harking back a few days to the comments about government waste, I noticed a "suggestion" today that part of the savings to be made are by increasing the "digitisation" used in government. Is it just me hearing alarm bells ringing {:-{

My wife and I are already tagged so our family can check on us if we fall or have a 'turn'. Our family phones can locate each other even overseas.   Authorities are looking to more accurately locate mobile phones so why have an implant?

To be honest, I wasn't thinking about that aspect but more about the previous failures that governments have had with the "digital revolution" and just how much it has cost us all, so putting it forward as a potential saving is a bit of very wishful thinking. As far as the rest is concerned, we're all numbered in so many ways, especially since very few of the numbers cross-refer, that personally I couldn't give a toss about adding another {:-{

Svitzer Australia advises a 'lockout of Employees' of their Tugs in all Australian ports due to a failure of a 3 year attempt to resolve a new Enterprise Agreement with ships Tug Unions

Svitzer has a 'near' total monopoly in the supply of Tug services to all Australian Ports

1. So, previously our Members suggest that these Tugs are on some sort of continuous engine preheat during an outage between work shifts..........what happens here?
2. Does Svitzer have 'near' total monopolies in other Countries?
---------------------

If my memory, Svitzer has also been awarded a Contract to supply Tug Services to our RAN Australia wide

 ......https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=1e203306c9e0fde7JmltdHM9MTY2ODM4NDAwMCZpZ3VpZD0xYTRmYWU1MS05Yzk0LTZiNDUtMjQyOS1iZmFjOWRhNjZhNmImaW5zaWQ9NTQwMw&ptn=3&hsh=3&fclid=1a4fae51-9c94-6b45-2429-bfac9da66a6b&psq=Svitzer+has+also+been+awarded+a+Contract+to+supply+Tug+Services+to+our+RAN&u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly9zZWF3YW5kZXJlci5vcmcvc3ZpdHplci1hdXN0cmFsaWEtYXdhcmRlZC10b3dhZ2UtY29udHJhY3QtZm9yLXJveWFsLWF1c3RyYWxpYW4tbmF2eSM6fjp0ZXh0PVN2aXR6ZXIlMjBBdXN0cmFsaWElMkMlMjBBdXN0cmFsaWElRTIlODAlOTlzJTIwbGVhZGluZyUyMHRvd2FnZSUyMHByb3ZpZGVyJTJDJTIwaGFzJTIwYmVlbixEZXBhcnRtZW50JTIwb2YlMjBEZWZlbmNlJTJDJTIwc2VydmljaW5nJTIwdGhlJTIwUm95YWwlMjBBdXN0cmFsaWFuJTIwTmF2eS4&ntb=1

"As the winner of the Defence Marine Support Services Package 3 tender, Svitzer will provide towage services for Australia’s naval fleet, the management of Navy towage assets, and the development of naval personnel training in major ports around Australia.
With a network of over 20 ports nationally and as the largest employer of Australian seafarers, Svitzer Australia will continue to promote and support Australian and local maritime industries and jobs as part of this long-term contract"

So I expect our new Federal Government may step in here pretty quick with some emergency powers to advert a pre-Christmas national shipping shutdown

Derek

NB......this posting is not intended to report on any Political input, but absolutely important for Tugboat matters with a Worldwide supplier of Tugboat services

Travelling steerage class.
Three stowaways apparently made the trip from Lagos Nigeria to Gran Canaria  , some 2400 miles, perched on the rudder of an oil tanker . Reported by the Spanish Police to be de-hydrated but otherwise OK.

they could have at least asked the skipper for a pot of paint - so they could paint the bottom of the boat while they were doing nothing and paid for their passage. %% %% %%
