torpedo 800 and 850 motors
« on: July 26, 2011, 08:23:03 am »

I was given two motors,a torpedo 800 and 850,and am planning a 34-36 inch hull,(scratchbuilt don't know exactly what yet) but am at a loss as to what type of speed controller, what type of battery(ies) would be applicable, and give best power and running time, and also which props would be suitable at least as a start point.I would like something IMPRESSIVE,but don't know wether that would be displacement or planing.Anyone got any pointers,or have been in the same position I'm in now?

I think you will find the 800 is intended for the displacement type hull ie, large tug, and the 850 is more suited to the faster type boat. I am sure someone will come back with more info. Check out Cornwall Model Boats in the traders section

On 12 volts the 800 motor will spin at just under 5000 rpm, the 850 at 9000 rpm.
It depends what performance you want in your model.
Both motors can turn quite large props but can be power hungry with big props.
As an example I run 2 x 800's in a 6 foot destroyer on 50 mm props and gives slightly over speed.
