The summer holidays are nearly here
and while I've still got an assignment to write
thoughts are turning to the "project".
See
HERE.
Before I do anything to the hull, I'm trying to get my head around what needs to go in there, and where. Thoughts so far are:
- Small motor and prop...to one side of the keel as per the original
- A big battery...or maybe even two
- A centre-board - and I'd like this to be motorised by remote to allow shallow water approaches. Waverley claim the model will sail without a drop keel but I understand the original I'm copying had one so, might as well. But, it'd be nice if it could come into the shallows of a lake for easy retrieval.
- Main sheet winch
- There are two foresails - I'd like to work these together BUT using two winches; a starboard and port tack winch. I'd anticipate using an on/off channel (such as "gear") on the tx to select one tack or the other and use an on-board micro-processor to drive the winches. I.e. when I select port tack, the starboard winch immediately spools right out, releasing the foresails before the port winch winds in according to the mail sheet control channel. Make sense? This way I could do spiffing things like heaving to.
- I'd like to be able to raise and lower the sails by remote too. Maybe the foresails and mail independently.
- As I'm having a micro-controller in there, I'm wondering about using, say, the flap knob on the tx
to alter the ratios of the fore and main sheets so that I could effectively move the rig's CE forwards and backwards as I sail.
- For ballast, I'm hoping to cast plaster blanks for this around all of the above components and then make removable lead pieces that'll sit in the bottom of the hull
- To allow for lots of functions, I'm thinking of using one channel as a selector switch. I.e. a given number of pulses toggles a certain function; I know that's been done before.
I'm sure I'll think of some more as I go. Can you tell I've been reading proper sailing books? Probably a mistake. I realise that it'd be silly (but not impossible) to recreate in RC all of the controls available even on a turn of the century sail fishing boat but I'm sure it'd be possible to get quite a lot of trick things going on.
Any comments? I'm sure I'm not the first. Can anybody point me at builds like this that've been done before?
There's nothing like being ambitious!
