Where ever you come from, what ever part of the world..we all live united in one thing!!

The Earl of Sandwich ( Admiral of the Fleet.....link to boating............. and one time member of the infamous Hellfire Club ) did us all a service when, one night, he was too busy gambling to leave his table, and demanded a "hind of beef between two loaves of bread"  for his supper!.

Since then his "invention" has risen from the lowly jam buttie to finer cuisine.

Whilst I was sat the other day, eating another "creation" of cold pork apple and black pudding sausage topped with blue stilton cheese tomato and mayo, ( a milder one for me really) I wondered what others like to put on their butties............

Being one to experiment I've tried anything from prawns with mayo and orange slices to vegimite, cream cheese with peach slices...................all yummy! or how about hot haggis with red grape slices and sweet chillie relish............truly scrumptious.

My wife and kids think I'm just off another planet,  {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

so what's your favorite that you've ACTUALLY  tried.......give me some inspiration........I love a challenge!!! %% %% %% %% %%

forgot to mention the bread, but the nuttier and seedier the better  O0 O0 O0 O0

Nothing as exotic as that menu...but for a snack, a slice of thick white bread, fresh as possible, salted Lurpack butter, half a jar of marmalade spread on with a plasterer's trowel, a packet of Oxo flavoured crisps(if you can get them)failing that a packet of cheese and onion will suffice, sprinkled across the marmalade, then another slice of bread and butter to hold it all together.

Here's another favourite...same bread, same butter, but this time lay a dozen fish fingers across the bread, half an inch thickness of Heinz tomato sauce, and topped off with another slice of bread and butter.

Normally followed up by a visit to the john....often within the hour.

And  my wife thinks I'm daft because I like chunky orange marmalade and Cheddar cheese between two crusty white slices.

Sausage egg and bacon, all three between two slices.

I also  go for the fish finger butties.

And of cause Marmite!!!

Marmite and chunky Peanut butter spread thickly on a doorstep of real fresh bread.....preferably warm!

Or I'll also go with the Fish fingers (funny how you never see one in an aquarium with gloves!) but with enough mayo to ooze out and down the shirt!   (can be done in the microwave too!)

I wasn't going to reply to this thread, because I thought I was weird.

...But, having read the above, maybe not.  %%

I like a good half-inch of sauerkraut on my bread. No butter, just a fat slab of pickled cold cabbage.  O0

how about a slice of fresh made granary bread, thickly spread with a good dollop of butter, then heavily sprinkled with raw porridge oats straight out of the box, that in turn covered in a layer of caster sugar, and another slice of thick spread bread on that.
yummy.
not forgetting a real good chip butty and plenty of salt of course!
(my diet may start next week!)

In my teens (some time ago) I'd get home from school and have a "Marlon Sandwich" - Marlon from "The Perishers". Two doorstep slices of bloomer loaf filled with inch-thick tomato sauce. Then I'd be ready for a cooked 'tea' when Dad got home from work. And I remember sugar sarnies as well. My mate Dave used to take black treacle sarnies to school for lunch. We used to make him sit in the cloakroom to eat becuase they stank!

Here's another one...my old aunt(now long deceased)would have two slices of brown bread, well buttered with proper butter, with a good layer of lettuce leaves laid on one slice, and then sprinkle the lettuce with a really good covering of sugar, then the other slice of bread over the top.

It might have tasted strange, but it obviously didn't do her any harm...she lived to be well in excess of 90 years old.

Heres a few that I regularly have when I cant be bothered cooking a meal or when I am busy in the workshop.
A 1/2 inch thick slice of smoked gammon, well cooked, and fettled to fit in a suitable length of well buttered 'Tiger Tail' with some lettuce, toms and sweet chili sauce.

or Thick sliced Hovis with sausages (decent ones of course) mushrooms black pud ulster fry and a fried egg, sticks to the ribs that one.

or , a cob of sirloin steak,( medium rare) loads of fried onions, loads of English mustard in a lump of baguette, again, well buttered.

By way of 'afters' you cant go wrong with a crunchy peanut butter and cherry jam sandwich, very moorish.

With all this talk of scoff, I must now go and make some nice smoked bacon butties, liberally anointed with HP Fruity Sauce! A packet of 6 slices of bacon is just enough for 4 rounds of toast.

And finally, you can allways tell when you have had a good butty, because you need to take a shower after eating it. :-)) :-)) :} :} :}

Dicky, I never liked sugar and lettuce sarnies, but the oldies obviously did!

And as for you, PO Nick...I have one word to describe your gastronomic adventures. Delicious!!!!

Now, what was that old saying? Oh yes, I remember..."if good food is the way to a man's heart, then leave the door open for the surgeon....."
