Aircraft carrier at Soton Water
« on: July 31, 2011, 11:31:57 pm »

So HMS Illustrious, soon to be sold to china and renamed "Irrustrious", sailed out of Southampton water today.  Lovely sight, big ship.  Very light in the water of course because of no planes.

Where is she going? Why is she going?  What the heck use is Illustrious with no aeroplanes????

God save the Queen!

According to her website she has been working up, exercising Apache helicopters in the Channel. She is due to replace Ocean in the Autumn and may be sent out to Libya if that conflict is still continuing. Ocean then enters refit.

Ultimately Ocean will be kept on despite her drawbacks as she is the larger aircraft platform.

Well yesterday she was escorting six Round The World yachts that were setting off from Ocean Village. Unless she was carrying Lead aircraft I doubt they would usually effect her profile. always has been a bit sticky outy of the water. Currently she has been re-roled as a Helicopter Carrier. Why she has not retained  a dual role including Aircraft Carrier is probably due to the government of the day not having the big brass ones to admit they may have been wrong about something. I know six year olds act like that but didn't realise it extended to elected ( Minority ) governments!!

Yup,

Old Nelson must be shedding bitter tears.

On the other hand, if this simpy means peace reigns, bring it on.  Im glad we dont need to defend against, say, the Kriegsmarine any more!

They ARE refurbishing the Victory: http://www.hms-victory.com/

Whether this will include updating the radar and sonar electronics and fitting Aster missiles together with retrofitting a couple of Olympus gas turbines removed from Ark Royal remains to be seen.

Of course, being largely wood construction, the ship already has stealth characteristics....
