Photographed the Italian WWI MTB MAS 96 at the Vittotiale on Lake Garda recently.

Excellent walk-around pictures.  Where exactly is this museum on Lake Garda ?

The Vittoriale is located above Gardone Riviera on the West side of Lake Garda.

http://www.vittoriale.it/

I haven't visited the actual War Museum there, separate chargeable guided tour on top of general admission charge, but with MAS 96, the Puglia and a small collection of warship models on site there is plenty of free and unrestricted access to items of interest for ship enthusiasts. The buildings and gardens are also interesting.

The light cruiser Puglia is cleverly done, the bow section having been hauled up the hill and merged with a concrete 'hull' set into the hillside. Sample shot attached and full walkaround to follow under new topic.

mmmmmmmmm............ :embarrassed:  without knowing the design or history of the  Italian WWI MTB MAS 96 ......

They appear to have an extremely well reinforced towing point @ the bow........[as being towed....not towing]

Could this have been ........being towed to a stratergic position to conserve fuel? .....prior to engagement with an opposing force?  {-) %% .............Derek

Sadly yes - they were towed too far ( sadly because we were on the other side :}) These boats had quite an history- try google on SMS Szent István:

Interesting place. Thanks.  Did you notice the midday wind direction reversal ?  Something to do with the Alps at one end of the lake and the Med at the other.  Windsurfers and sailors can go miles down from the Riva end and be fairly certain of a tail wind home in the afternoon. Maybe a glass of something at Limone or Malscene and back to Torbole for dinner ( and another glass of something.) O0

Italy was on the allied side in the First World War, and suffered terrible losses in the mountain battles.

:} yes and one of the reasons of their loses is that we were on other side of Alps( well actualy we were on both sides of Alps and we fought on both sides,... but never mind- no politics here)
