Controlling BL motor speed
« on: August 26, 2011, 03:17:41 am »

I am converting a 1/72 plastic kit LCAC to radio control. I am putting in a 6" prop with a out runner BL motor and ESC. My intention is to run the prop continuously, so I am not going to connect this to the throttle at receiver.

I am thinking of plugging the ESC to the gear of receiver for a on off function. However, I need to adjust or tune the motor to the required rpm.  How can I adjust the motor rpm that will give me enough lift without connecting to receiver throttle?

A computer radio will allow you to set a percentage for any channel. my
jR66 allows 0 to 150 %. I'm sure there is a gizmo that can be fitted on the receiver end to achieve the same result.

I believe an ACTion servomorph will do exactly what you want :-)

Low end speed of of all Brushless Motors (BL) is pretty ropey at the best of times.
You can get sensored motors ... how deep are your pockets?
You also might want to consider a BL ESC programing card or a servo tester.....

If you are prepared to pay a bit more Castle Creations do some that are superb, as slow as you want big motors if you want and reparable for a set fee no mater what you do to it.

As Cklasse has stated its for a lift fan for a hovercraft, I don't think low speed running is too much of a concern, just enough adjustment to tone down the top speed of the motor ;)
Cheers

Thanks Nick.
I believe the brushless will spin too fast and I just want to reduce the rpm for the right amount of air.
Here's my setup so far and still working on it to mount the motor.

Hole made in the deck of LCAC, a truck is used to mount the motor since the deck is one big empty space. I will be building a container on the truck to hide the motor.
