Martin....seriously... :embarrassed: the title Pompey Visit had/has me tossed....I didn't/don't understand the signifience between Pompey & Portsmouth?  :o  .....

Derek, have a look here, or simply Google "Pompey Portsmouth" http://www.welcometoportsmouth.co.uk/pompey.html

I think the short answer to your question is that nobody really knows why Portsmouth is referred to as Pompey, but there are many theories.

Peter.

Hi Dicky - Pompey lost at home 0-2 (think that was the score )- Saints won 4-1 at home
and Leicester city won 4-1 away  - so we are all happy

Thanks Geoff.

Nice to see my old team [of my youth ] Barnet beat Pompey.

Even better to see my present team, Southampton ahead of Pompey in the tables and having a decent win yesterday..

"Portsmouth play up, play up Portsmouth" doesn't have quite the same ring as "Pompey play up, play up Pompey!" Doesn't seem to help though.....
