I have had to suffer from some really bad sailing "skippers" over the years , the "Power gives way to sail" at all times brigades. The tanker was in a narrow channel , had to maintain a decent speed to keep a steady course therefore the rules of safe navigation state that every other ship must stand off and allow the tanker to pass through.
Absolutely a clear breach of the rules of the road and the skipper of that yacht deserves a very heavy fine.
One time off Aberdeen in the 80's we were towing away 40 miles East of the coast when a yacht "skipper" came on the VHF demanding I altered course for him ( he was heading right for the PORT side of the boat... I was clearly showing him the red nav light ) , considering that a fishing vessel under power towing gear has right of way over ALL boats EXCEPT in a narrow channel where a large vessel is restricted in her ability to manoeuvre I explained on the VHF that he had to alter for me. This led to him screaming and swearing his head off threatening to report me to the Coastguard , I simply got out the rules of the road from the almanac , read out the very clear meaning that he was in the wrong twice over ( a vessel approaching another vessel which is showing its red nav light must stand off - give way - the vessel showing the red light ) and that as the trawler was 115t and steel that his 30ft grp yacht would simply bounce off and probably sink leaving nothing more than a few scratches in our hull he altered. Thankfully Aberdeen coastguard came on ( they had listened to all of this as it was on Ch16 !!! )and ordered the yacht to alter course.
