Mermod's - Tasmanian abeille liberty/bourbon build
« on: August 10, 2011, 09:14:10 am »

This is my build of a 1:40 scale Abeille Liberty , at this scale it works out at 2 metres long.
This photo gives a good idea of size (De walt drill for scale).
The first few photos are of the building of the plug for moulding in fibreglass.

NB: The forum had a bit of a meltdown a while ago,
this build is actually by Mermod.

I notice that you are using MDF board. As this is a heavy absorbent wood, have you considered the lighter plywood instead ?

hi minime , Im a cabinetmaker by trade and have a hard time getting out of the habit of going as fast as possible to keep a boss happy, plus I have a nice set of tools and a habit of forgetting about the world when im boatbuilding.

ah that explains it then. Oh well I guess I should go do some building myself, instead of sitting here admiring your work...

Bow and stern thrusters are definately on the cards if finances allow , checked the keel width yesterday and the largest raebosch thruster fits perfectly , only downside is that they cost about $120.00 each down here.
I have seen a couple of other builds where water pumps have been used , might look into that idea.

Your making good progress  :-)) Stern and bow thrusters will be amazing. I know, they are very expensive, but some people have also used a racing prop on the end of a flexishaft mounted through a piece of PVC pipe. They might be a bit more powerful. but definately worth looking into.

things will probably slow down a bit while I try to get  that stern just right , I must also add that these are the nicest set of boat plans ive ever worked with , the ribs were right and flowed straight off the plan with no modifying , I dont know about you guys but I havent found any other model plans where one or two ribs seem to be from a completely different boat when it comes planking time.

Hi
Very nice start to your build.
I have seen this boat built before. For the life of me I can not find the bookmark/link.Any way it was on a picasa web album like this one

http://picasaweb.google.com/105202506859524458881/NewProjects?gsessionid=DWnOge8mnp2rWvx_j6UFUQ.
May be Umi or PeterS or xtian 29 might have a link to it.
