Revell Queen Mary 2
« on: May 03, 2006, 01:58:50 pm »

Hi

Has anyone built this kit for radio control, I'm wondering if it would be along the lines of the Revell corvette.

Any information or ideas welcome.

I'm still trying to find my next project !!

Thanks
Richard

Have a look in the latest issue of Model Boats, they have a good article on how to do it.
I have heard of one idea to replicate the pods is to use either an electric toothbrush or those cheep ?5ish mini subs you can find in toyshops.

Hope this helps

I bought the kit last year with the idea of building it for RC.

Having looked at the kit, I have shelved it until I am realy desperate for something to build.

I liked the article in MB has given me an idea or two.

Let us know how you get on with your build.

Hi, re underwater pods for QM2.  The RNLI lifeboat at around £50 has 2 under water units of surprising power that could be utilised.  I have 2 of these, after the 'club' one was modified.  A donation to club funds would secure them!

roycv is right the little white pods from a baby severn are ideal for this application, ive tested these little pods and they are perfectly capable of running from 7.2volts up to 12volts and they pull next to nothing amp wise.

hi there tester only just found this thread. I am finishing of the QE2 then moving on to QM2. I have some small motors that are used in pagers to make the vibration, I intend to fit them in to the pods. As for steering i will make all 4 pods turn as i think 2 fixed pod would cause a problem. Hows your build going .john

I found some small model boats with wind up outboard motors in Gamleys toy shops at £2.50 each. If you cut off the motor bit, the drive mechanism looks quite useful for converting into pods using a belt drive within the hull to power them. I was going to just convert two pods to being steerable but haven't got very far with the project at the moment.

I've heard that the QM2 working conversions are very susceptible to wind conditions, not surprising really given the amount of superstructure compared with the immersed hull area.

Hello Tester.
I was going to build the QM2 as a working model as described in Model Boats, but having seen the etched brass fittings kit supplied by Gold Medal Models I decided to make a static model, the quality of these have to be seen. The items mentioned in Model Boats are easily purchased and I still have them in my stock box for future use should something take my fancy.
Good luck with your build. :-))
