How about a Flettner?

I wonder if anyone already has built a working model of Flettner-Ship?
Wouldn't you think this E-Ship 1 was a rewarding project?

Often thought about doing one. Presumably you have to spin the rotors the other way when you go about. I did wonder about making a Flettner rotor with a savonius rotor on top to spin it, but I think the effective rpm of each is very different. I quite like the 1930s prototypes - you could do a Vic smeed painted lady variant. The book is "mein weg nach dem rotor" but I've never seen a copy - I suspect it's full of maths and stuff.

I've thought about it too but surely you would run into problems with the viscosity of the air being the same for both model and full size ship. Whether you could offset this by spinning the rotor more quickly I don't know, and presumably the comparative 'smoothness' of the model rotor  surface as opposed to the full size one would have an effect too.

You would have to test in scale wind conditions too which would mean no more than a gentle breeze.  Still, it would be interesting to make up a model  test rig where you could vary the motor speed and maybe the friction on the rotor surface.
