Galway Hooker
« on: August 29, 2011, 09:08:43 pm »

A friend of mine Scratch built this lovely Galway Hooker it took him 9 months . "Tony" Builds some smashing models - but - As he has no computer (And dose not;t want one ) he has no Way to show other people  his builds so I have taken it on my self (with Tony's permission) to show the world  as it was... If this generates any interest I shall endeavour to take more photos

Longshanks  - No relation to Edward I take it.
I have at the moment only sparse info - But will talk to Tony tomorrow at the lake - However I do know she is plank on frame and the planking is 1/16 ply which made the reverse curves at the bow and the tumble home aft a lot easer as the danger of split or broken planks is greatly reduced.... I will try to get some close up of the hull and the rig as soon as I get a chance..Thanks for replying

Thats all for know .. Tony said that the Hull planking is 1/16 ply cut into planks the frames are 1/4 ply because the hooker is basically an open cargo boat the foc'le and the forward hold by the subterfuge of a dummy turf cargo and a solid bulkhead at the after and of the hold has been made water tight ... to keep the look of an open boat the accidental flooding (by a knock down) of the cockpit has been excepted, as the hull has enough buoyancy to stay afloat and get back in despite this . The boom swivel has been made a replica of an actual Hooker as per the plan

Tony is very pleased with the hooker, she is very responsive to the rudder , has a fair turn of speed and with 5 lbs of lead in the false keel shes also fairly stiff ... Tony said she is a joy to sail but was a pig to build with all the tight curves and reverse curves He almost gave up and skipped her at one time,  but he said he would never build another one

Waverly models do an excellent hull for this as well as plans and drawings
for the Galway Hooker, the keel is slightly bigger so as to accommodate lead shot in the base of the hull
I built one a few years ago and it sailed well,
