sealing my smit nederland
« on: August 31, 2011, 11:38:26 pm »

Hi my name is Mick & I have just joined the forum. I am in the process of building the Smit Nederland & have a few concerns about making it water tight. I am building it as per the plans supplied ( I have seen a few changes that would have helped to stop water ingress on this forum but alas too late.) I need to know what to seal the bow thruster & propshafts with (the hull is ABS) Also how to seal the removable superstructure to where it fits on to the deck, is there a special tape or something ?. Any help will be welcome. I live in Canada & have not found any clubs here local. I do know there are lots of people across the pond with lots of knowledge for model boat building & are members here.( I have already had help on a different matter from Dave @ ACTion & Martin @ Westbourne, thanks guys)I will in time post some pictures of the build but must first figure out how to post them. I have the Fairmount Alpine waiting in the background to start. I will post some pictures of the kit soon. NOTE, I would need to know the actual product name. Glass would not help ,Thanks guys,Mick B.

Mick,
To ensure that no water enters the hull via the superstructure join it is convention to use a raised lip (coambing).
This should be about at least 1/2 inch high and a good tight fit around the inside of the superstructure.

To seal the propshafts and bow thrust tube in I use Holts P38 (Car body filler).
I tack the propshafts in place with drops of superglue and ensure they are in the correct position then fill with the P38 after roughing up the plastic with sandpaper.
As it is a car body filler I let it come out of the hull and smooth of externally before rubbing down when set with wet and dry paper, used wet.
Over this I pour Epoxy Resin on the inside as the filler is porous.
The outside is sealed with the paint on the hull.

Hello, What I could suggest is to make sure that your rudder tubes are above the waterline. It is suprising how much water can get up them. I have known members, me included, scratch their heads wondering where it is coming from, hope it helps, Nemesis
