Newbie looking for sails/rigging advice please
« on: August 31, 2011, 08:48:33 pm »

Following my son being given an very old RC boat by a friend of the family about 6 weeks ago, we have been visiting a few local boat club events and model shows.  My hubby (birthday soon), had a go with someone's rc yacht, and became immediately hooked, so I have bought him one of these:

as an early birthday pressie.  Sailed a couple of times this weekend, and bumped into a group of IOM enthusiasts, who were quite impressed with the Discovery as it is, but suggested a couple of mods that would improve it.  We are total novices at this, so would appreciate some advice on where we would get:

Eyelets (suggestion was that rear sail should be moved so it is slightly more taut, so we need to make another hole.  Current ones are about 3mm ID, so something similar and a punch/tool would be great)
Hookclips (it think that is what they are called, like you get on the end of a dog lead! - have found larger ones for IOM yachts at nylet, but these are only about 10mm)
Cord/thread for re-rigging (current black nylon has a slight frayed area already where it runs through a servo arm, so would like something a little stronger/longer lasting, so we can replace it before it possibly breaks)
Crimps (sorry if this is wrong term - I know them as this through jewellery making - basically metal cylinders to crush and hold 2 ends of thread to form a loop).

Can anyone please suggest where we could get all this, preferably from one supplier, as I have found odd items here and there, but seems silly paying additional postage if I can find all at same place.

Sorry for thick questions, and possible wrong terms, but this is all a bit new, although we are all being sucked into this great new hobby very quickly!

Thanks in advance for any advice  :-))

Hi Cornish maid, in answer to your Q's there are not many places to where you can buy all the things at once... I use 2 shops myself, one is a fishing tackle shop for metal clips, fixings etc and for everything else Wilkinsons(a large chain of household goods stores)... in regard to the crimps, a jewellery/craft suppliers is as good as any as you alluded to in your post, but I just tie a loop with a single knot and a drop of superglue...

However, if you are fortunate to have a kite shop nearby you can probably get all you want from there..!

Hope this helps...  :embarrassed:

Hello!
There are specialist supplies of model chandlery such as:

http://www.pjsails.co.uk/

...and I'm sure others too.

Lifejacket's right though, fishing tackle can fulfill a lot of yachting requirements.

look down this page to the monsoon thread by Tiger Tiger,I may be wrong ,but I think the Discovery is of chinese manufacture and the monsoon thread which is very discriptive of the mods. which can  be done to improve the reliability and handling of this type of boat.
Cheers Col
