1/24 scale galleon build
« on: September 04, 2011, 09:40:22 pm »

Welcome to my 1/24 galleon build.

The boat is being made from a glass fibre hull that my club made the mould for.

The hull was the first one the club made so on one side there is a bit of a fault on one side but nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of filler.

this should be fun and take a long time, all the builds are now in the loft to make way for the galleon, pics will follow.

If you specify the Waterline length, beam and draft dimensions I'll be able to give you a good idea of what the as-built model is likely to weigh if it's to sail at it's plan Waterline - rest assured it'll be heavier than you think.  %).

My recently finished 1:32 scale 18th Century square rigger - W/L = 875mm, Beam = 240mm, Draft = 114mm  weighed in at 29lbs compared to the 27 -30lbs drawing board estimate. :-))

It will have to be power assisted for in displays and tricky moments the motor will be powered by one 12 volt battery,  I will use a 6 volt battery for lights and possible another twelve volt for ballast.

The boat has no plans and is made from looking at the other ships in the club so will check waterline of a similar model next time I'm down there ,(Tuesday) .
And trust me I know that there no light feathers  :-)) .

Be prepared for more ballast!
The finished weight of my plank on frame hull was 11lbs (including a 6v 3700Ma Sub C battery for radio etc and a 7.2v 3700Ma Sub C for emergency use only  motor. A further 18lbs ballast (bolt-on fin) was needed to bring the brig down to its plan Waterline. :o

Pretty looking model, that is the type of model intended for this 'slightly' reduced sailing ship hull. Having just finished molding the second one of these hulls and owning one of the slightly bigger 3 masted models, I can confirm it will not be a light model.

Pics of the galleon.

I have started its much needed hair cut.
I have also devoted a room to the galleon to help with space
You can see the damage I mentioned earlier on the lighter bits of the hull but u.b.n is going to lend me his filler to help , thanks.

After the hair cut.                    I can see why hair dressers don't like people wearing gel when they come in for a hair cut.

The hull has a cut line about 25mm below the top of the molding, that is the line to cut to, suggest leaving it to a sensible grown up ( if you can find one) who will hack it down with a tenon saw! Sounds like my job for Tuesday then...

I'll definitely be following this thread with interest, "historic scale sail" really appeals to me even if my own efforts in this area haven't met with much success!
What type of ship are you planning to build from the hull? Something from the 18th/early 19th century (as shown in Popeye's post) or an actual galleon from the 16th/17th century?

Those "holes" in the hull look rather alarming - looks like either a bad case of shipworm or the results of an enemy broadside! Are they actual holes, or just areas where there's no glass fibre in the resin?

To answer your questions   its going to be an 18th century ship.

They aren't holes just where some of the glass fibre has  stayed on the mould creating thinner bits.

looks like you have an air problem in your mould ? it may be worth checking the rest of the hull for bubbles in the gel coat ! you can buy a gel coat filler from factor o ( limberline spur ) or from chris hornsby marine , you will find this to be much harder than ordinary automotive fillers , its also waterproof !
