My 1st Model build - Fairey Huntsman 34"
« on: September 10, 2011, 03:15:42 pm »

Hi All,
I'm  in the process of building my 1st model boat ! A Fairey Huntsman 34".  I thought I will make it a bit easier on myself and bought a kit with a fibreglass hull. I built myself a stand for it and I'm now ready to start  :-)
The last picture show where i am with the hull frames. More to follow as i progress....

I haven't yet decided on the motor/esc/batteries, but one thought was this Overlander Brushless motor which is a T4250/06 800kv, a reasonable size motor which should have lots of torque but would it have enough RPM at only 800kv (with a 14.8v lipo it will give me 800*14.8=11840 rpm) ?
I have a 3 blade 40mm prop on a 4mm shaft at the moment, I guess i want the ability to turn a reasonable amount of speed.
http://www.overlander.co.uk/tornado-thumper-v2-4250-06-800kv-motor-949.html

some other motors Overlander do are:

Nice clean work so far Chris  :-))

Watching this thread with interest as I'm hoping to renovate one of these boats sometime in the not too distant future.

Regards,

Ray.

you seem to have done a lot of homework. That selection of prop to motor seems like a very educated and wise choice you have either read a lot, been told, or allready do another form of rc. id up the voltage though or possibly use a higher kv motor. maybe this:

or maybe this, should produce enough torqe:

Thanks !
I have spent hours reading posts on this forum! Though I have done some Heli and Plane modeling before but not with brushless.
I will check out those motors as well, I can always go up a 5S battery as I haven't bought them yet.

going up to 5s would be the better choice, if its too fast you can always down to 4s.
Dont forget to buy a lipo balance charger too. A 60 amp esc will do the trick though make sure it can cope with 5s voltage.

i use this esc for my boat its ok. BUT sometimes you dont get the instructions and occasionally some dont work properly lol but there cheap as chips.

Hi all,

Thought i would post an update, been away all week so not had a chance to do much. But i have just found out that after gluing the side stringers and placing it in the hull it is too wide  doh!!  :(( (see pic).

I also have to do a fair bit of sanding down of the bulkheads  so the fit the profile of the hull.
oh well off to do a bit of remodelling....

Did you read the instructions wrongly ? Or was it a mistake in the plans ? Alan

Don't think I read the instructions wrong, there are cut out slots for the stringers to fit in. I think there is just large tolerances in the manufacture of the pre cut wood and hull.

Thats shocking that a kit comes with parts that are clearly wrong size, also the moulding looks very very resin rich which makes for a very heavy moulding .Extra resin only adds weight and no extra strength, the inside of the hull should look dry not shiny and wet .Also they used white resin so i bet any money its not even top quality Lloydes aproved resin just cheap easy laminating resin. It amazes me how these companys get away churning out rubbish for the money they charge, its also a chopped mat layup no cloth at all,im wondering how much you paid for it because this moulding was done on the cheap.

i think there is a manufacturing error.

i think the holes for the motors to go threw are on the wrong bulkhead. looking at the pic, it seems to me the rear bulkheads and lot narrower and deeper than the front ones. The ones you have for the back are actually the front, and the manufacturer has cut out the engine provision in the wrong bulkhead.

Your absolutely right Mike, that sructure won't fit into the hull properly (the deep end of hull is at the front)
I know if it was me who bought that kit I'd be intouch with the supplier and iether get my money back or
insist that they correct all the faults in that one. I feel sorry for you Chris as this is your first build and all these
negative coments must be a disapointment to you but your only going to find it dificult to work around the
faults. Did you buy it on E-bay ? There is someone selling the kits for around £130. Alan

I think i might have misled you that pic with all the clamps on, it just happens to be sitting the wrong way around on the deck ply. The frame work did fit in the hull at the back (stern) it was just at the front where is was too wide, i have now "re modelled " it and it now fits in the hull. (Phew)!

phew that was close. i wouldve looked rather silly if you had decided to take all those bulkheads out and rearrange them only to be wrong cos of a upside down picture. looks like its back on your head now, you should be ashamed >>:-( {-)  :-)) you have managed to get it fit nicely though. Proper modellers do that!!

ok got around to doing a bit more building, a bit of the internal cabin. Bit of a pain to keep together but rubber bands and masking tape helped  :-)
My Motor arrived today as well.. went for the Tornado Thumper V2 4250/06 800KV Motor, to go with my 40mm prop.

Now to hunt for a water cooled ESC.. is there any make/model to avoid? (unreliable etc..)

I was also told that if you go for say a 60amp rated motor for use in the air you should go for a higher rated ESC for use in the water like 100amp due to the greater resistance is this true?

I have a 34" Huntsman as does a freind and we run 900kv Outrunners with 45mm props(2 blade) and I also have same setup in a 35" Perkasa, Huntsman are on 12v and Perkasa is on 14.8v and all with watercooling.   Use 80a esc's and no issues at all, run very cool.

Very nice build look forward to watching the progress.

I will shortly be fitting the prop shaft and was wondering what clearance to leave between the top of the prop and the hull ? ( with the possibility of increasing the prop size in the future).
Also how far back should the face of the prop be from the rudder with a water scoop in-between ?
( the instructions are not clear  {:-{ )

Done a bit more work today glued the frame into the hull and drilled the holes for the rudder and prop shaft.

Hi all,

Sorry for not posting sooner been a bit busy at work  :((
Got around to doing some more of my boat. After putting the basic ply deck down i thought i would plank it to give it a more authentic look (plus i have seen some great examples by you guys  :} )

I then started to fit the cabin.

I was wondering what to finish the desk in. Someone said to epoxy resin in with either thin tissue paper or thin glasspaper (more transparent) with several coats of Epoxy, sanding down between coats then t-cut to finish. I'm running a few trials of the above to test, has anyone done anything similar?
Thanks
Chris
