Hi Chris

I am enjoying your build. So far I have just been lurking but how do you achieve that caulking effect, what materials/any photos? I'll be trying it soon that's why I ask.

Hi Dave,

For the decking i use 6mm wide x 1mm thick strips of mahogany and 1 mm wide x 1mm thick strips of a white wood (cant remember which one). looks nice, I think i plan on using thin glass clothwith resin on the top,1 layer of glass cloth with probably another 2-3 of resin, sanded down in between coats and then t-cut to finish.

Regards

Hi Chris

Thanks your 6:1 looks a really good proportion, I'll go for that.  :-)) I can't tell from the photo - is that Kingplank a regular 6mm or does it have aslight taper?

Re thin tissue paper - I take it you don't mean tisssues as in a box of? Is it more like that tissue paper that comes with shirts? Or is it a tissue especially for modelling?

Keep posting Chris - love the pics.

Glass makes much more sense to me but I did read it somewhere about a good quality tissue paper.
Perhaps (no probably, or even certainly {-)) I have got another process mixed up.
Well thats what the forum is for - I can make my mistakes here and avoid making them on the boat  O0.

Sealing Balsa - Dope, tissue paper. http://www.building-model-boats.com/tissue-and-dope.html

Thought I had read something - just failed to engage the grey matter too  :embarrassed:

Hi Dave,

The planks are normal square shaped not tapered, where they meet i have cut them at and angle to join them up.
There are 2 type of material you can use with resin:
1) Thin glass fibre cloth or (dries transparent)
2) Tissue paper, not from a tissue box but thicker, a bit like tracing paper but not as thick, i got some from my model shop, (dries not quite fully transparent).

I have run a test on the 2, the one on the left is tissue paper the one on the right glass cloth, its difficult to see but the glass cloth one is fully transparent and brings out the colour of the wood more while the paper one very slightly dulls it.

Hi Chris

I am much less embarrassed following your last post  :} and I'll take your word on the glass issue
Re planks - it was only the Kingplank I wasn't sure of because of the camera angle.
It's lovely anyway mate. So like Oliver ............ Please Sir, can I have some more?  :-))

Dave, I used grey card, from Rennies top of Bold street, very cheap! I laid a plank, stuck it with alphatic (not sure on spelling?) wood glue (they sell that also!) as it works very well and dries clear, then used bostic to glue a strip of card, then the next plank, and so on, very time consuming! The card does not need to be flush at this time, you sand it down, then use ronseal clear resin so the finish does not turn into something resembling toffee :} I tried to replicate teh weathered effect using a grey wash, but the plank effect was lost, so rubbed it all down and just used the stain, which ended up real nice! :-))

look how the wood has weathered in this shot

Hi Peter

Yes yours and Chris's caulking gives great definition to the planking. What width and thickness was your planking?
I am looking at some black walnut just now for my Spraymaster. I am really enjoying the Huntsman threads like this.

I have also fitted the motor and electronics..

including cooling for the ESC.

with the cabin on and a few more coats of resin on the deck.

with railings

I then did a dry run of the motor and had a bit of vibration so i fitted a p frame to the prop and that cured it.

I still have a lot of fitting and cabin work to do but i thought i would take it for her 1st sea trials. Video on You tube..
1st http://youtu.be/wXNvXDeV9GA

2nd http://youtu.be/s-RCK7bGw9I

3rd http://youtu.be/3qbBtx7I4Xg

I only used 1/2 power max here with a 40mm x type prop on a 14.8 Lipo. I plan on trying it on full power on a 45mm prop when the weather stops raining!  ;)

Here's my build log... just started mine.
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=36813.0

I had the same issues as you with the inner frame being a little too large... I warmed the hull with a hot air paint stripper and got it almost all the way in.  Just need to level the stringers flush with the hull edge now.

Reading your thread I think I might have over estimated the motor (1020Kv on 6S lipo)

wow that might actually take off!
Those video's are only using 1/2 power on a 40mm prop on a 800kv motor with 980 watts (though im not using all that power as im only putting 4s through it  - it can take 7s).

One thing i learnt was make sure you add a A or P frame to the prop as i had bad vibration at only 1/2 speed. Once i fitted one it went away  :-), I also fitted a support at the other end of the shaft inside the boat.

Ive got a heavy duty P frame on order. I read Red181's build log and decided that one would be wise.
http://www.mobilemarinemodels.com/acatalog/Shaft_Supports.html

I am starting to think that the motor might be too much, so I'm going to order something a little more sedate maybe in the 6-800Kv range
