Which Tug kit for a beginner?
« on: September 13, 2011, 09:15:18 pm »

Hello All,

Reached the tender age of forty something and thought it was high time I built myself a model tug!

Always loved tugs and have been meaning to get round to building one for sometime...
However, I've never bulit a model boat before, so though it best to turn to you experts for some advice.

So what do I want:
1: Absolutely has to be a nice, powerful looking tug. Nothing else will do!.
2: Has to be in a kit form with everything included in the kit.
(although I guess I'd have to buy electric motor, electronics, radio gear seperately)
3: Has to be suitable for a beginner boat builder.
4: Doesn't want to be too big, as I'm limited on space a home.
5: Not worried about the budget (up to a point!) for the 'right' kit.

So, over to you guys - I'd be very grateful to hear your thoughts and suggestions.
Thanks in advance for your help

Have a look at our front page

                http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/

Click on tugs and browse away.  I expect others will recommend some to you.  I'm on boat 17 now and they're all good to make.

Welcome to Mayhem.   :-))  Have a good read and choose wisely.

regards

Model Slipway Al Khubar

Web site http://www.modelslipway.com/

Nice kit, not too big, not too small, clear instructions and drawings and excellent after sales service. Nothing too much trouble.

Or model slipway wyeforce. Heres mine, i modified it slightly to my own design.

I found it a pleasure to build and a great technical challenge in some areas.

my full build can be seen here - http://www.danwalker.co.uk/Harbour_Tug_html/tugdelivery.html

I'd strongly recommend model slipway kits, not only for the quality, but the brilliant service you get.

personally I would say that you should avoid any billing boats Tugs untill you ave a bit more experience as Billings tend not to worry too much about the quality of their instructions and some assume quite an advanced level of shipbuilding terminology and skill

For example my mayflower kit never once mentions planking the hull

Why build? Howes have reduced the ARTR Newcatle tug to £280

http://www.howesmodels.co.uk/RadioControl/viewProduct.php?ProdID=6130

Here's an earlier thread :-

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=30397.0

Almost tempted myself, just don't know how to explain I'm getting another boat to the 'boss'..... lol

perhaps they fancy you build it on a fuselage, as a bit of a diversion from their instructions, lol %% %%

Good selection from Model Slipway with excellent instructions. Al Khubar, Wyeforce or Dutch Courage would be a good choice. Excellent service and great support during and after your build from Jackie and Lawrie, they can supply motors too if required. Or what about Mark's Model Bits ASD tug? They're fairly straightforward but you have to work from the plans, no instructions.

Good luck with whatever you choose, keep us posted. Remember we're all here to help eachother, Dave.  :-))

If you're going for Model Slipway's Assurance Tug, don't hold your breath. I ordered mine over 2 weeks ago from Westbourne Models and am still waiting.  >>:-(

Hello All,

Thanks very much for all the replies.
Seems I have quite a few options to look into!
It's also a huge help to be able to look thru a build step by step, with the problems encountered and solutions found.

Thanks again for all the pointers (more welcome!) - I'll keep you posted

Spook

Delivery of Model Slipway kits is usually 2 to 4 weeks from date of order.

We depend on outside manufacturers for the supply of grp hulls, and with the Bank Holidays and our own holidays things have been delayed.

I would also look at Tyne Models flying spindrift, I think that's the best looking tug on the market.

You could also consider Active by Mountleet which is a reasonable starting priced Tug at a decent mangeable size

All good suggestions, but I think Model Slipway have the best instructions for a first build along with excellent service, Dave.  :-))

Agree with Dave, Model Slipway satisfies all the requirements [1-5] plus they can supply motors and props and great after sales service.  :-))

Its very hard to find fault with MSW instructions.  They do cover every single step and leave nothing to guesswork.   An example to other kit suppliers to follow.

Too true, and if you are unsure about anything they're only too pleased to help. You'd think others would take note, Dave.  :-))

I just can't wait to get started.
