where to purchase QUALITY METALS.
« on: September 14, 2011, 07:16:20 am »

I am new to the hobby of model boating, & though I have a background in automotive work we generally do not have a lot of contact with purchasing metals, hence the question about where & what to buy. I can see on the Forum that some of you have vast experience of such subjects. PS= all this is a steep learning curve & even harder for an oldie like me.( I have lately recovered from a stroke ) Mick B.

What kind of metals are you looking to purchase and in what quantity?

Most of the brass and aluminum you see other modelers using comes from K&S Metals, who seem to have a display in every hobby store.  Lee Valley Tools sell large brass 'blanks' that are surplus or mistakes from their tool-knob turning factory, but they only offer this directly from their stores.

Thank you zz56. I am looking for Most metals but particularly brass, brass tubing, stainless steel, etc. I just bought a lathe so will need bar stock in brass ,steel & aluminium. I never thought of Lee Valley, there is a store here in the city. Thanks to you they will be receiving a visit. I bought some K&S brass but found it was poor quality, which put me off buying anymore of their stuff. This led to the forum question, I guessed there were folks like you that had some experience with buying metal, so thank you very much.  Mick B.

Hi Mick,

In Calgary, give these folks a try. I used to use them when I lived out there.   http://www.metalsupermarkets.com/msc-storefinder.aspx?map=CA

They had a good supply and decent prices.

Cheers

Thanks Tom, I bought some metal there, they were very helpful & will cut it any size you want. This forum is really great, I find if there is not an answer on here it probably don't exist. Mick B.
