Armidale at last.
« on: September 16, 2011, 05:01:51 pm »

I have just about recovered enough from my pneumonia on top of emphysema to start on my Armidale 1:72 scale.

I received the hull from Steve in Oz last September and since then it has been sitting on my bench.

Having trimmed the top of the hull I then made and fitted the bilge keels and stabilizers.

My next job was to fit the M2 prop shafts, P frames and motors all of which I obtained from http://marksmodelbits.com/

The props are Raboesch from www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk I also fitted the two rudders

I then fitted the rudder servo and linkage

Next job was to make and fix the skeg between the shafts. The skeg, bilge keel and stabilizers are all made of plasticard reinforced with brass rod.

Gluing the balsa deck support came next after rubbing down the inside of the hull to smooth and supply key for glue.

The observant ones amongst you will notice that I moved the servo and linkage from its original position to make it more efficient.

That is as far as I have got so far. Dont hold your breath for the next installment  as I am still struggling healthwise at the moment.

That's coming along nicely, Dicky. I particularly like the motor alignment on the bracket. Very tidy.   :-))

Looking forward to further updates but don't rush on our account.   :}

cheers

Hi Dicky, glad to see you are well enough to at last make a good start on the Armidale.
As Ned says - Nice and easy there is no rush.

Hi Dickie
Glad to see she is underway.  O0
I have been working on Ararat for 9+ months and the deck is still not fixed down.  <:(
Enjoy what you are doing, if you get fed up with one part do something else.
Have you thought of a name yet?

Nice to see that you've recovered enough to start building again.
That looks a super hull,
good luck with the build and please keep us posted when you make some progress.

Hi Dicky
Just thought you may need to know the props need swapping, the real deal looking at the stern has the stbd prop spinning clockwise for fwd and port prop spinning counterclockwise for forward. I work on the Armidales here in Darwin Australia so any info you may require just ask.

Glen.

Thanks Glen, I only stuck them on so I wouldn't lose them, they've got to come off again.

Have you joined TF 72 yet, they are a really helpful bunch. :-))

Hi Glen
That's an interesting photo.   Almost looks like a winged keel at the bottom of the rudders.  {-)
I presume it acts like the turned up wingtip on big passenger jets to stop losses at the end of the blade.
Have the trim tabs been polished or is it some sort of primer?

I have done a little bit more to the boat.

I have had a final check of the rudder linkage a fixed the deck in place.

I have cut the access holes in the deck where needed.

I have also started on the superstructure.

More done today though not a lot as it was too hot in my workroom.

Fixed the coamings around the deck openings.

Carried out some more work on the superstructure.

Dicky that is a great start but yes it was too hot today, even in the frozen North.  SWMBO insisted in lunch out and a run
into the countryside but I found a great little model shop in Hexham (right on the railway station platform) mainly deals in
trains and I managed to top up my supplies of plasticard to get on with my build so not a totally wasted day.
Keep up the good work BUT don't overdo it.

Lived in Hexham for years before moving south and go back to Hexham every two weeks and never even knew there was a model shop there!

Hi Dicky

Things are starting to take shape, looking good.

You asked on the TF72 forum about the availability of some of the parts for the 72nd Armidale. I am still working on a few more parts to be cast in resin. When they are ready I will let you know. Will still be a couple of months away.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the comments chaps.

Think I can wait a couple of months Steve.

Did a bit more to the bridge today, its amazing how much work there is in it. Did I just say init, sorry ?

Marked out ready to cut more holes in the hull.

Got too hot and had to pack it in whilst I still had the energy to get out of my workroom [31 C in the garden apparently]

Hopefully Autumn will return next week.

When you have emphysema Richard, very hot or very cold are not good.

Spring and Autumn temperatures are "normally" best for me. :-))

Nice build Dicky, you don't see many in 1/72nd scale, i built a Leeds Castle several years ago, found it very difficult to source fittings etc, was a nice size though. I'll watch with interest.
Is this the same class of vessel that's on the Tv at the mo, "sea patrol" Nice looking Boat.
Keep up the good work Dan
PS hope you feel better Soon  :-)) :-))

Same as on TV Dan.

I am a member of TF 72 in Oz and one of the members, Steve is casting fittings for his and I am hoping I can get a set from him.

It was Steve who made the hull.

Hi - I like the look of this - I have the same hull and fittings which I imported from APS models down under - I'm even using the same props, but intend to run on brushless motors. Seeing your build is very informative and will be a great help when I get around to building mine. If it's any help I can post some photos of some of the kit parts from APS - RIB's and mast section etc - it might give you some idea of how to go about constructing them from scratch. Keep up the good work.

PS I have the same problem with an overheated workshop as it's in my loft - can't get much done

Did a little bit more today.

Drilled out the bulwarks ready for cutting holes.

Glazing bars put in windows of wheelhouse. Not easy with shaky hands.

Started making fittings, hatches, doors etc

I do have a bit of a problem. I don't have a drawing showing the port side of the boat.

On the portside of the main cabin roof are a couple of vents, I need to know their sizes  and positions, dimension wise.

If any one can help it would be much appreciated. :-))
