Smiths Docks
« on: September 27, 2011, 05:29:31 pm »

Smiths Docks, I hear you cry. Never heard of them say others. But at one time they were the biggest shiprepairers in the world.
Please bear with me for a couple of minutes.
Back in the later 1800s this huge organisation began to take shape. And apart from anything else, they became a very philanthropic outfit. They tried to better the conditions of the workforce through education, societies and so on...including the donation of parkland to the local community.
They also produced a Monthly Journal which would normally run to around 100 pages. This Journal wasn't just about ship repairing, but also aimed at educating the workforce.
It's been my very good fortune to have been loaned some (so far) of the original volumes with a view to putting them "on disc". Mainly just in case anything untoward ever happened to the originals.
But with the permission of the owners I'm being allowed to publish whatever bits of the books I want. I should mention that the volumes run to over 400 pages each. But don't despair....For the moment I'm going to concentrate purely on the photographs of ships (in or out of dry-dock).
This will be a long running topic. I imagine that 95% of the photos have never been published before.....but because of the size restrictions imposed on this forum I can only post the photos. Next will be in the  "Real Ships" section. BY.

That sounds like a fantastic opportunity Brian - know Smiths Docks well from my research into the SD14's that were built there.

Would welcome anything that you could produce my friend!!!!

Peter, thanks for the link. Unless I'm missing something, what you posted is a table of stuff. Or am I wrong? The postings I'm now putting on "Real Ships" are photos of the ships either built or repaired by Smiths during 1924. These are extracts from huge volumes (400 pages +) and are therefore too large to post in their entirety. Hence my offer of making the whole lot free to those who are interested. But yours is a useful adjunct. Cheers. Bryan.

Peter
Again, another interesting posting. But I must repeat that my postings so far are just the tip of the metaphorical book. They really do need to be read in the context of which they were written. Like "how" and "why" and "when"....this thing isn't just about ships an shipbuilding / repairing. In many ways it's about how a Company that did those Industrial "things" also made a huge contribution to the local people who worked for them. BY.

I looked over the photos, thank you for the time and effort to do this. I really enjoyed seeing the hands on workmanship, handling heavy steel, forging shafts and sleeves, and repair/modifications. Whole locomotives on deck, wow to have been there to see it. What these men could do is heroic and with time constraints to boot. I would be interested in copies on CD, and I will continue to watch for more of your posts.

Thank you

Thank you for that. Always nice to get a message from our American friends. May I suggest you send me a PM and we'll take it from there. Regards. BY.
