Water proofing rudder tube?
« on: October 04, 2011, 09:00:21 pm »

Hello! I am building the Deans Marine model of Mohawk (f-class). Its the first RC kit i have ever made so please bear with me. I am building the kit as per the instructions below the water line and i'm ready to fit the rudder tube but there is no mention of how to make it watertight. Should i just grease the rudder shaft or is an aftermarket product a better option? Any help welcome

As long as the rudder tube sits higher than the water level.a little bit of grease, will provide the sealing you you require.
Even though the tube might go below waterline, the grease will provide enough sealant, hopefully.

Hi Nick:  Great to hear you are building a Deans Mohawk. I have a thread running on sister ship Amazon, and would be interested comparing notes here.
Mark is spot on.  As long as the top end of the tube is above water a little grease will keep things dry, same as for the prop shaft/s.
Please keep us posted on progress - and some pictures.
Best wishes.  Bob

Hello Bob! Thanks for your response. I'm fitting an oiler tube to the prop shaft. Have you taken the plunge and fitted three props and motors to your model? I thought about it and bottled out. I decided to put all the work in above the waterline. Nick

There should be an oiler tube outlet on the single shaft supplied with the kit, there is on mine.  Just needs a short length of flexible tube.
I am making mine with twin shafts, which Amazon had.  All 12 Tribal Class were quite individual being built to a spec by several dockyards over three years.

No such luck with the prop in this kit, its quite old from what i gather. Have you had a go at the over the stern rudder?

"Have you had a go at the over the stern rudder?"

That is a fixed 'false rudder', sort of stabiliser, and is additional to the main steering rudder underneath.  All detailed on the Deans plans and instruction booklet with the kit.  It just glues onto the hull stern.

Sorry Bob but text in Blue is reserved for the moderators, so I've altered it to a nice shade of green

Yes this dummy rudder was if fact the real deal on the Tribal class at the time.
