Another scam
« on: October 07, 2011, 01:45:06 pm »

This from the Federation of Small Businesses this morning:

SCAM ALERT – Beware of Bogus BT Representative
(Forwarded Message Below):

"I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date. The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, Allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!

When asked, he gave his name & phone number – 0800 0800 152. Obviously the fellow realized I didn't believe his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would disconnect my phone to prevent this. AND HE DID!! My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again. Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT.

I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card ,there & then. I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT. He hung up. I dialled 1471 - number withheld. I phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognized. So I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently, but it is escalating. Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam.
The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please make as many friends & family aware of this.

How is it done? This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800 152 which takes you through to BT Business. The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying. (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced!
The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool many.

By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get past merchant services - it is all about getting the credit card details which include the security number, so that it can be used for far larger purchases."

Andy ORPIN - Police Community Support Officer

I have already rehearsed my response!

Another one that is going on at the moment is the guy who call and says he's from Microsoft and there is a virus or some other sort of malware on your computer and he needs to remote onto your computer to clean it off. What he actually wants to do is install malware onto your computer in the form of a backdoor so he can then access your system at anytime to steal your data and passwords.

He's not cut the phone off , he's still there............... saying nothing.
The person that makes a call controls it so it's still connected until he hangs up.
In my days at BT with Strowger exchanges, if you didn't hang up it held the call for 9 minutes and then the equipment forced the call to release.
I would imagine there is a similar facility now with electronic exchanges.
So you are only "cut off" while he's on the line.
Did his number come up when he rang to start with, I'll bet it was withheld.

It was twice the metering period at local rates for the time of day.  If the same rules apply, just take your time "trying", this resets the "Called Subscriber Held" timeout.  When he comes back on tell him that my pension fund thanks him very much.
It is simple and plausible, but I do doubt it's actual authenticity as a direct working scam.  Credit card transactions are traceable, but it might be that the real prize is the credit card information.
Have a look here - http://www.snopes.com/fraud/telephone/btscam.asp

There is also a rash of people with English name and sub-continent accent pretending to flog home insulation under a government grant scheme.  Best way is to just say "excuse me a moment" and leave the phone off the hook.  Eventually they get fed up, the phone squawks at you and you are back to normal.  You can then 1471 the number, and then say to google " number tel uk".  If this turns up a bunch of people complaining about the fraudsters, 1477 the number.  With several providers, this reports the last incoming call as a nuisance call.  Just don't use 1477 after your favourite aunty has rung.

just got an email stating that a direct debit had been refused by my bank in respect of TV licence renewal. Click on this to pay, or click on this to alter my details.
As I am over 75 I don't pay for a TV licence.
Another way they are trying to get our details and our money.
BE WARNED.

A huge area of growth in China is mobile phone fraud. The authorities here are having a mass crackdown but so many people get caught out. Most of the scams are for small amounts, like 10 quid, but with mobiles the audience you reach is huge. A lot of them are special offers for well known products with discounts, payments are taken, but there are no goods.

I wrote that back in 2011, and don't know if it is still there.  It was a talktalk facility, but I dont know if it still works or works with any other provider.
A very recent scam (this morning) is an email that I got trying to look like it came from a friend with a link to what looked like a newspaper page extolling the virtues of buying into bitcoin via a bitcoin management company.  Since the actual "value" of bitcoin is steadily dropping, the only way to make money from dealing in it is by being at the pointy end of the Ponzi scheme that it almost certainly is.  Looking at the e-address on it, it is a Luxembourg based outfit, so at the very least, questionable.

In 2020 the free TV license concession given by the Government expires . They have left it to the BBC to decide wether any ongoing concessionary arrangement is provided and funded for the elderly and bewildered . Anyone going to surmise on the outcome of this ?

Hi Malcolm just had a nuisance call, so entered 1477 and Virgin say they do not support this.  I have emailed a fellow club member who is on the insdie of Virgin, he may bring it to their attention.
You can nag companies into doing the right thing.
I nagged NTL as they were not sending out BT telephone directories, may seem crazy but they were obliged to in law.  Eventually they checked it out found a guy with that on his job description and they started being distributed.  Not sure where my one comes from now though.

I think they Government are working on the basis that it will be the BBC that gets bombarded with nitrogenous excretion rather than them and the Beeb can see it coming which is why there is some fancy footwork going on at the moment.

So BrianB6 says...."Come to Oz........No TV licenses at all....not that there's much to watch"

Well with one pair of eyes and two ears, how many stations do you need? The ABC National + ABC24 + ABC- Viceland Network.........we could not want for more from those other ;)  Commercial Networks

So the next and progressive SCAM is the privatization of viewing rights to the mongrel <*< PAY TV syndicates

This is why we should all support AUNTIE :-))  [which is our ABC]

Hi DerekABC National is a radio program, ABC 24 is only news and Viceland is SBS.
As far as I can tell most of the programs are either cooking, 'How not to get married' or murder shows.  <:(

Yes BrianB6.....bad choice of wording on my part  :embarrassed:

The ABC is our National communications carrier in both audio and audio/visual medium
SBS - Viceland is an arm [divested] of the ABC --to cater from imported people?]
ABC 24 is just that
ABC FM is just that

If you cannot find an acceptable information or entertainment forum with these, why not sign up for a SCAM with Murdoch PAYG group <*<

Hi all, my memory of Oz TV is the high frequency of adverts. It must be difficult to make TV pay with the distribution of population over such a large area.

Is it difficult to get anyone to watch TV in Oz, according to pick in UK, most are being pulled over for spot test breath tests and I suppose the others are "aving a barbee on da back of da yute".  :-))
