Cracking pictures Dodes.
Some of those old girls were outstanding, I worked on a couple of them back in the sixties, I was a kid back then, and have a great affection for them.

In case you have not seen these, here are some more of the Assurance class, they appeared to have lasted longer and went to several RN owned departments than the Envoy class.

Well, hold on there, skipper, before you get on to diesel tugs. Here is another steamer or two! First two are Brit military tugs that lived most of their lives in NZ. A Saint "Toia", an Empire "Tapuhi" and the last is a fine Lobnitz tug "Otago" bought on the stocks mid '50s and never had any serious work to do though she was well capable of it.
They all have in common that they lived here, I loved them and they were all knackered while they still had a lot of useful work in them. Technology just overtook them. Like it does to us all.
RIP.

Another dose of steam for you. A view of downtown Auckland taken in the early 1900s. See the petrol lorry about to displace the horse and cart patiently standing by. This is an 80' wooden steam tug that dutifully towed sugar barges across the Auckland harbour from the Colonial Sugar Refinery at Chelsea. They were laden with bags of sugar which she used their derrick and steam winch to unload. The empty barges were towed back to the sugar works for next day's trip. She was Austaralian built in 1904 and towed across the Tasman  and worked until '41 when she was knackered. I couldn't resist starting a model of her and have the shadows set up. Should be ready for grandson Monty's 7th birthday. -He's 4 months. Keep you posted.
