you would think the bureaucrats would have learnt from the muck ups after the chch earthquakes but they still seem intent on doing nothing until the paperwork is done. i didnt see tv last night but i was told there was a guy with a bulldozer pulling a beached container out of the sea and some jumped up official told him to stop because he didnt have a safety plan in place. absolutely pathetic.

Having seen the pictures of the Rena on our TV news, there are huge cracks in the hull and she is listing over 20 degrees.  <:(
The oil they are trying to remove is apparently the consistency of Vegemite, ie. Marmite.
Some of the containers have washed up on the nearby beaches but others have sunk.
Definately one for the experts.  O0
At least the owners have said 'sorry'  >>:-(

At the very least, there is oil coming ashore so the HnS/eco people have a valid concern about pollution.

There's a retired laker up on an island off Cape Breton now and the media keeps giving people airtime for talking about the 'environmental impact' and 'oil contamination' despite the bilges being completely cleaned before it left port and all the fuel oil for the generator being removed shortly after the grounding.  Every time they drag some local dullard in front of a typewriter or camera to worry aloud about the 'ruination' of the local fishing industry i lose a bit more faith in my country.

Complete and utter balls-up.
Couldn't organize a "xxxxx"-up-in-a-brewery here in NZ, sorry to say.
They never learn. With the marine equipment they have available here, they could have unloaded the deck containers, pulled it clear, and towed straight into harbour, before the storm got here, then pumped out the oil and unloaded the rest of the containers at their leisure. But no the paperwork and office squabblling about who has authority to do what, and who's in charge, just goes on and on, disaster after disaster. All greedy for cash, but don't want to work for it, or screw everyone and take the money and run.
