hannahs hms ark royal
« on: March 18, 2007, 04:39:00 pm »

I have just started to build my model of hms ark royal at 1/96th scale. we doubled all the measurments to make it 100'' long, my dad cut out the keel and bulkhead frames on his power fretsaw as it is quite scary and i sanded them all smooth. we have just started to build the frame of the hull.
I hope you like the pictures that my dad took of me building my model (even though there is not much to see yet), i could not wait to post this on the forum.

PS. thank you again john for the plans. :D

Dear Hannah,

Well done! I could never do what you are doing unfortunately, I simply don't have the patience, skill, or proper time. I like to think I am good at maintenance and general repairs/adjustments/mods./additions, but I could simply never build from scratch as you are! Please let us know every month or so how your project proceeds.

All the Best, Regards, Bernard2

Really good Hannah, I wish I could get my son as enthusiastic about modelling [boats] as you obviously are.
Keep posting the pictures.

Hi Hannah

WOW, once again. I could never even consider to take on a project of this size, for fear of stuffing it up. I cant wait to see more pics of your build. You are really powering on.

Well done keep posting the pictures, keep up the good work. Are you going to populate the deck with an airwing?

Hi Daryl I will be putting a squadron of swordfish on her but not for at least 18 months!!! looking at the plan it is hard to imagine how big the model will be but now all the frames are mounted on the keel she will be a monster but dad says we can build in 2 halves so she will be easy to transport if not to sail!!! ;D ;D

Hannah, what a superb project and what a credit to you for taking it on.  It seems to be increasingly difficult to get youngsters interested in modelling of any form nowadays and here are you taking on a model that most of us would think twice about tackling.  Very well done.

I look forward to seeing the pictures as the model progresses.  By the way I think you need to ask your Dad for a bigger workshop!!

I think you should change the word slowly, to quickly, Hannah. Your build is looking very good. Keep the pictures coming.

Wow comeing along nicely, I am sure it would look fantastic on the water. If you are ever near RNAS Yeovilton their museum is well worth a look it has lots of exhibits which are appropriate to HMS Ark Royal, also a bit of trivia. In Bristiol docks there is a boat moored called Doddys Ark, it belongs to the last person to fly off her deck before she sank.

Keep up the good work

Well done Hannah, coming on in leaps and bounds!

Dear All,

Did the WW2 Ark Royal carry Walrus aircraft?

Hi Bernard2

As far as I am aware Walrus was not carried by Ark Royal.

To save any arguments my model will be carrying a full airwing of swordfish torpedo bombers. I have been busy again today and me and dad have planked nearly  quarter of the hull and it so the hull will soon be finished but we are running very low on plywood and dad says we cant buy any more until he has sold his hms intrepid. I will post some more pics soon.

I have now run out of wood but me and dad are going to Westbourne Model Centre this weekend to get some more (and I am visiting my nan and grandad).
Here are a few more pictures, hope you all like them.
