Weedy pond problems
« on: October 16, 2011, 04:32:53 pm »

It's very weedy at my club lake.... Even my Victoria is picking up more than it's fair share, so I need a sailing yacht without the traditional keel blade and bulb..
One of the old hands suggested a Lesro/Duplex 575.... Any other suggestions..

Have a look at Victor Models' V32

http://www.victor-model.com/products/v-32

Or Soling 1/2 meter
http://www.victor-model.com/products/soling-half-meter

The only issue is you need to pay shipping from the USA.

Victor Model's web site seem ok now.

Earlier this year I got a kit from the USA...I paid postage, customs, Vat and a £8 handling charge by ParcelForce.

A £21 kit became a £52 kit... {:-{

I think a Mini Soling at $89 dollars, would probably cost me in the region of a £130 by the time it got to me..

I like the Moonbeam, but it's way to big for my car... If they did one at 30" or so....  I would be interested...

My original question was about the Lesro 575. Anybody got any hands on experience on its sailing ability?

I had a 575, lovely little yacht it was. Mine was the original Duplex one, now sold by Lesro Models.

The instructions call for a couple of pounds of cement in the keel for ballast, but I used fishing lead shot in mine, get it all positioned about right, then cover it with silicone sealant.

A lot of people changed the wooden dowel masts for alloy tube, but you can also use use carbon rod, again from a fishing rod.

You'll not regret a 575, they are great fun boats.

Thanks Nordsee... :-))There was a 590 on Fleebay..I heard they are not as good as a 575, so I did not bid on it...

Lesro wants £75 pounds for a new 575...Is that good value for money ?

I did  :embarrassed:
Then realised there were no instructions,no sails, bits and pieces that didn't belong,
so I held my breath until I was outbid  :-)) :-))

With our lake the water level has dropped and obstructions that weren't a problem are now
My Victoria is ok but when the wind is over 20 Kts I want to sail my marblehead on a reduced rig
as I don't know what else with a shorter keel would handle the wind.
Our lake is a hundred yards from the Humbermouth/North Sea

Our lake gets weeded up at times , But most of us in our club sail traditional sailing vessels (Pilot cutters, Luggers, Hookers, Schooners, Ketch's and Square Riggers) these do not for the most part have weed catcher keels  These racing yachts (Like Marbleheads) have keels (Narrow ,Deep & Bulbed) which could not have been better Desigmed for snagging and Fouling weed . Trad boats seldom have trouble

Hi
The best yacht in weedy water is the J Class.
It has a verysmooth non snagging underwater form.
I sail one regularly in very weedy water and provided the wind blows the boat sail through most weed.
There is anew supplier of this type of hull, a member of our club.
Have a look here  www.jclasshulls.co.uk

Hey I've just caught up with these pages and I like what I see! I too am having weed problems on the local waters and I think a 'J' Class might be just the thing for me to build. Are there many about yet?

The owner of the company manufacturing the J Class hulls has now produced a new hull mould and can offer single or up to three colours in hull as well as complete kit for deck and all fittings.
The finish of these hulls is superb and the wood work is lazer etched and finished take a look at www.jclasshulls.co.uk
I understand he can also provided full details for rigging and sails.

Hi
The first voyage of first J Class completed by the owner of the company.
Sailed very well and the overall finish is excellent.
Lazer etched deck is especially good and new design complete hull with inner balast will be even better in weedy conditions
