Trawler mast lights?
« on: October 19, 2011, 09:38:56 am »

Chaps, I'm looking for some help regarding the mast light set up on my Thunder Tiger Majestic trawler...(now renamed the Dawn Treader)

This is how the leds(non working)are set up on the mast as it comes out of the box...view is looking sternwards from the bows.

I want to install a working led set up on the boat, so could anyone advise me as to what colour lights would go where, please?

This is the Dawn Treader as she is at the moment, just awaiting the proper scale working trawl to arrive.

Thanks chaps,

I guess the boat is modelled on an under 10metre stern trawler, Neil...

I have a look round on that site, thanks for the link.

Hy Rich
Those mast lights are the wrong way around , viewed from the bow's to the stern the red port light,s should be on the right.

I believe the way to remember  goes something like    GREEN over white, fishing at night, RED over white trawling at night

Sorry Bosun the two red and two green lights on the top of Rich's mast can be either way round - they are all round fishing lights NOT nav lights.
You just would'nt have them all on together - mind you fishermen don't seem to understand their own lights - have seen some very strange
permutaions from fishing boats at night and they quite often have them still on when they sail into harbour and are obviously trawling.

viewed from forrad
1 red 1 above the other = not under command lights, eg used wen at anchor or we use them wen hauling in the dark
1 green over white= fishing lights , displayed whilile trawling
shud also be a mast head light (white. all round view) and stern light (same as mast)
and port and starbourd nav lighs on the corner of wheelhouse roof
 light arrangement on my boat

red over white mast head lights = a drift net fishing vessel fishing, green over white masthead lights =  trawler fishing. Then there are a seperate set of vertical all round lights 1 red = shooting nets, 2 red hauling nets and 3 red = nets fast on the seabed, That was what I learnt for my DTi mates ticket. The vessels show port and starboard plus stern lights in accordding with the collision regs. The drifter exhibits a white all round riding light at the end where the net is secured. Siene net fisher men exhibit a drifter lights but when setting or recovering its net it exhibits 2 vertical flashing amber/yellow lights.

And I believe there's also a red over white pairing when I lower my lobster pots.

Gonna need a bigger mast...

I forgot to mention the red and white lights over the white are all round view, the white is a standard masthead steaming light.

Those mast lights are the wrong way around , viewed from the bow's to the stern the red port light,s should be on the right.
Bosun

You sure about that Bosun?  Port - red- on the right which means that vessel is sailing directly at the viewer so it surely is a view from bows to stern! Innit? Just as in the pic!
Oops - I mean those nav light.  As for the mast lights they should be visible 360 degrees and not either side of the mast where they could be confused with nav lights if the lower lights were obscured for some reason.

It really all depends on what era / set of Rules you are building the model at.
A 1930s model wouldn't be showing the lights depicted here. The "main" mast light was the tri-coloured" lantern. BY.
