best RTR boat for young nephew?
« on: October 25, 2011, 06:34:47 pm »

Folks, my 8 year old nephew wants/needs a model boat for Xmas ;-)

I'm looking for a RTR and there are hundreds for sail on the internet.

What's wanted is a boat with a reasonable turn of speed, good reliability and a smile factor the moment the box is opened...

Any suggestions?

Why not also consider a simple kit to introduce him to the building side? Modesty forbids me from any recommendations... :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

It might be pricey to get in the UK but the Aquacraft Mini mono just came out and looks like it would be a lot of fun.

About £100....
Yes, I agree he needs to learn how to build a boat but I want him to enjoy the thrill of having a boat on the pond like I did when I was his age (in the 70's, when my boat actually had two trailing wires under the water supplying the power!)
He loves seeing my 26cc Esprite at Mote Park, Maidstone but I don't think he's quite ready for one yet  :}

RTR is OK on its own, but will be swamped by other radios if you sail with anybody else. :((

Consider swapping out the radio set before handing over the pressie. ;)

Just a thought.

Maybe look at a ARTR and fit something like a Hobby King 2.4GHz handset

My boys have these in Tamiya RC

The RC gear is good enough to be re used in another boat/car/other project and cheap enough not to worry about if he looses interest

Hmmm $28 in the states, that should work out less than £20 over here then??

When it's a RTR boat from out of a box it's 'a' boat on the pond.

When he's built it it's 'his' boat on the pond...

I can see both sides to the argument here.... I bought a couple of RTR cheapies for my boys and they loved them.  One now has a restored Billings white star and the other has my Phantom (when we finish it)

For a very first boat a RTR or ARTR is fine-  Gives them chance to gauge if its a hobby that will interest them and then go for a kit as the next build

For a around £70 I'd go for a Joysway Offshore Warrior Lite, the latest ones run a 2.4Ghz radio so no worries with interference and there's loads on eBay :)
