which wood to build a Swordsman?
« on: October 27, 2011, 10:23:55 pm »

Hi to all.
It's been along time since I built a boat like this.
So there are two minds of thoughts, should I build in from balsa or like my old Huntsman out of ply.
If ply, should it be out of marine or lite ply?
Can someone please advise?
Many thanks

I use a lot of 1/16 ply in my models. It doesn't have to be marine grade, but it does need to be thoroughly waterproofed - I use fibreglass resin inside and outside the hull. Rubbed down with wet and dry paper (used wet) it gives a good finish for paint, undercoat first then top coat(s).

Lite ply is good too, but it needs quite a bit of filling to hide the grain.

Many thanks for all replies.
It's the 36" version, so what size lite ply to use and where.
The hull would this be horizontal or
vertical skinned? using lite ply and what size?

olly49  :D ..laminated ply....be it 1/16" lite or 2.0 mm marine grade will provide a superior material to bend & [plate] the shape for a hull  O0

This ply material also has far greater parent material strength over balsa.......... :-)) ....Derek
