how many poles?
« on: November 14, 2011, 06:16:39 pm »

I need to program my fusion hawk esc, its asking me to set number of poles. Not sure how many poles my motor has. Can any one help?
Bought it from Overlander, it has 3 wires & the number on the box is K2845/5 KV3600

hear from you soon

Not enough information to tell how many poles your motor has. Best thing is to contact Overlander and ask them.

Yes, ask the supplier, or count them!
can you peer into the end off the outrunner bell, or take the rotor off?

It must be an outrunner - so take a light screwdriver and (starting somewhere you can recognise) move it round the rotor perimiter and count the magnets

The answer will normally be 12 in this sort of size

It's an inrunner, and I believe it's 3 poles.

Andy (done me homework on the Overlander site) ;)

I thought brushless motors were always even numbered on the pole count? All the ones I've encountered are anyway. A lot of inrunners are 2pole, but some are 4 or 6 pole. Beyond that you're usually into outrunner territory

Andy Go to the back of the class ;D
 do you think it has a north, south, north,
 or a south, north, south pole {:-{

Does it have a slight resistance that "cogs" as you turn the motor, the number of times it "jumps" to the next position per revolution is the number of poles, some motors don't exhibit this behaviour so it can be hit and miss.

It will be most likely 2 pole, maybe 4

Cheers
