SeaFrance in liquidation announced on BBC.

With a rumour that Eurotunnel want to make a bid for the ferries  :o :o :o

Biggest load of nonsense I have heard all day - why would they want to buy ferries when they are competing with them for traffic? The ONLY reason I can think of is to take the hazardous cargo trucks across that cannot use the tunnel..............

Cannot see P&O and DFDS putting up with that!!!!

Eurotunnel may simply want to take them out of circulation by selling them on.

True Colin, true...................but I guess they would have to pay a fairly high price as I am sure that DFDS/LD Lines would be interested in buying them (especially the Rodin and Berlioz) for a Calais service and the Nord Pas de Calais as a dedicated freight ship on the Dunkerque run.  The Moliere is not really suitable for either run so I guess would be sold on.........

The French press are reporting that the Eurotunnel offer is to buy the ships and then rent them back to the proposed workers co-operative to operate.
I think that ET have had their arms twisted by the French government over this..........ET is a mostly French company, it's employees are mostly French state railway employees (SNCF), SNCF is the parent company of Seafrance, SNCF (as a state organisation) was blocked by the EU commission from bailing out Seafrance....................therefore I think this is 'state aid' by the back door..........

That's a nice link Carl. I've been to Oostende a few times and I'll probably end up there again in May, there's good model shop there.
I've joined the Dover ferry forum too.

Is that when you are heading over on your 'anniversary' cruise?

And welcome to the Dover Ferry site - it is very good for the latest news and developments in the channel as well as all the photos and history.  The moderators can be a bit 'heavy handed' at times, and if a thread goes slightly off topic then they are apt to close it without warning.  You certainly dont get the banter there that you do here - I think they try to keep a slightly higher, professional, stance!!!!

Still, I find it useful...................

Ok I'll tread carefully thanks Carl. It's certainly a useful site though and many potential customers :}

I was looking for some GA plans for Spirit of Britain which I eventually found but my search led me to the STX Europe site. This is one of the better shipbuilder websites IMHO. You can do a search for a vessel or a company and sometimes there's  a little extra info in a PDF download.

Ali.

P.S. Now I know what my next model will be.

Yes - once the Army Corps settle on a course of action they will carry it out quickly
Shooter on the grassy knoll and all. Maybe it's more than a coincidence that I'm going
to build her? My first decision must have been around the time of her first real difficulties
in Hydlebos Waterway. Synchronicity - is that the word I want Ali? Anyway I am gagging
to make a start - will be asking you plug questions soon I hope.

My money - I think there is a scrap firm only a mile or two away that the Corps will tow her to.
They are talking $26M a month if she sinks and closes that waterway, tow her too far and you have
an increased chance of pollution if she sinks, leave any room for delay and there will be another
legal challenge.

I'll give you a virtual hug Dave.
I must admit I was really cut up when I learned that the Norland and Norstar(as I know them) were going to Alang to scapped. It's funny how a hunk of metal can mean so much.

Hi Dave - commiserations mate...I think I have this coming myself soon with the old FEV... As for the hull frames for the model K - can you give me a couple of weeks to test my drawings with a mock up please? Am thinking a plank on frame solution may be best for this one... Drawings are done but I want to mock up an assembly for you to look over before I finalise them. Carl

Just back from work and having a strong hot coffee

Hi Ali - Yes I'll take the virtual hug mate - I have spent a lot of time and effort on Kalakala - feels like my first motorbike is going south.

Hi Carl - I am truly aware of how hard pressed you are just now so please please don't mind me. My wife keeps me waiting just on
principle so I am well used to it. Having said that maybe I do fancy the boat more  {-) Oh the number of ways I would die painfully if she
ever read these boards  O0 {-) The thought of an 86 year old rival would really annoy her (the Peralta hull's 86 and Jenny is only 55).

I see you both said hello to Midori - can you guys just smell ferries on the ether?

Regards Dave

Hi
I'm just browsing and the picture below caught my eye.
site link here http://scherbakshipmodels.tripod.com/id106.html

Freedom has come in the form of my wife suddenly going to see a show in London.
Kids (19 & 25) are in total shock because I won't cook for them.
Dog looks quite worried as 18:00 nears and no move made towards his bowl. {:-{

Dave
I will feed Buzz the dog soon.

I think I'll stick to making ferries, slightly less windows.

Hi Ali

when does a vessel cease to be a ferry? I mean a regular run between two points say across the Irish sea is a ferry,
maybe to Spain it's a ferry, but how far can you go and still call it a ferry?

In theory I suppose you could have called the Titanic a ferry.

There is a thread on this subject somewhere in another forum but I've never read it. I'll get back to you on that one.

So nice to see you again Ali - it's been a bit quiet ferry wise without Carl (or have I been not looking properly?)
I'll enjoy your photos no doubt :-))
