Telephone / PC Scam Season Again
« on: November 12, 2011, 09:23:49 pm »

i've just had a flurry of these idiots with Indian accents and very English names like "Nigel" and "James" wanting to help me fix my PC.  Just today I spotted a link on the BBC tech page indicating that they have noticed the same thing.  The interesting bit was the replies, one of which had a very good script to deal with those vermin.

Quote
For these best results with these guys act worried, say
"I'll just put the computer on",
wait a bit then say
"it takes ages to start",
then a bit later say
"Oh scandisk has started..........1%"
wait a bit
"2%"
carry on with the same timing between percents and see what number they hang up on.
Originators record is 12% but that was after 15 minutes.

Give you a bit of entertainment, wastes their time, costs them money to help with my pension.  And after, of course, you use 1471 (if your telephone supplier supports last call report) to check the number, check that out on "who calls me", then 1477 (if your telephone company supports "report last call as malicious") them, always provided that nobody else has called in the meantime.
It doesn't matter if your PC is on or not, or whether it happens to be a Mac or a Linux machine.
They are telling you a pack of lies, so there is no harm in returning the compliment.

We've had quite a lot of them

Him : 'Your computer has a virus..'

Wife : 'Which one?'

Him : 'Your computer!'

Wife : 'Which computer?'

ad. infinitum until he gives up.

(Wife teaches I.T. at secondary school and there's about a dozen computers scattered about our house).

I Had one ring this morning. Not up to much at the time so I decided to play him along for a bit to see what they are using to scare people into believing them. :D :D :D
As I work in IT security it's always nice to know what the scammers are using to scare people.

After deciding which computer he wanted me to use notebook, Laptops or one of the desktops.

What he asked me to do is open the event viewer by a using a command instead of going through control panel.

By holding down the windows key and pressing R you get the run command prompt which is the same as clicking on the start button and then clicking on Run in the menu.

He then asked me the enter "eventvwr" which is the command to get the event viewer up. Same as clicking on the event viewer in administrative tools in the control panel.
Doing this through a run command means it works on all versions of windows.

He then asked me to look at the windows logs and the application log. He then gets me to count the red error entries and yellow warning entries. These he tells me are caused by the Virus which is slowing down my machine. (I don't think so).

It was at this point I think he realised that I knew what he was asking me to do and the line went dead.

From what I know of the scam the next thing he would have wanted me to do was log on to a website that allows him to remote onto my machine to fix the problem while he installed a bit of malware and may well of asked me to pay him to do it as well.

Who hasn't just tried this   ??????????????

I did and I came up wth a few red and yellow signs.

What does it all mean  ???   I exited in case I did something I might regret and returned to the safety of Mayhem.   :}

Ken its nothing to worry about. Its part of the operating system that logs information about things happen while your computer is running.

The only time that you need to look at it is usually when something is not running correctly.

There is nearly always a few red and yellow signs in there and it is there existence and the fact that a lot of people do not know that the event viewer exists that makes people fall for it.

You can clear the logs and it will not affect the running of your machine.
