I looked down inside the hatch and discovered a slightly painted motor assembly ??

The batteries are on charge ready for the main wiring ahead. I plan to not secure the deck until all the big stuff is firmly fixed below.

Hi Ken

Your mast looks great after your fix. I must say that I feel for you when things do not go quite as you would like! The main thing is that you were able to work through the problem, thats what makes this hobby so satisfying.
The models looking great. especially all the fittings. Very Smart  :-))

Thank you everyone.  Yes, it is always better after a good nights sleep.   :}   When I came to it the next day, it didn't look so bad, so I approached it like a new job.  Mind you, I'm glad its done.

Missed a day's playing as the grass cutter was cleaned off by  "Er indoors" and nature took over.    {-)

I have finally electrified the hatch covers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2qCuO7RG7M&feature=plcp&context=C46d936eVDvjVQa1PpcFMhr52u6BN8yUdS-2DD7B4jFpTHg3Pop78%3D

This was achieved by fitting two servos with extended arms under each end of the hatches. I use the Slow setting switch on my R/C and have wired the two servos together. The result has come out better than expected.

Thank you Channel.

Anyone close enough to take some pictures please ?  A new film has come up on 'You Tube' showing her coming into harbour.  It's a mine of information as it shows the 'tatty' paintwork and differences in colour scheme.  I have a few extra details but only of the Port side ! and now need details of the starboard side with the crane etc.   :}

Cheers

Spent the day working on the crane and realised there's more to electrifying it than I imagined.

First of all it's imperative that the boom is raised before a turn is activated as it will tear the arm rest away and knock the container tops off !!  ooh er.  I will need some crossover switching system to prevent this, so it's back to the drawing board.

Thank you Bill.  Also thanks to the members who sent pictures of the real ship.

Her condition these days is quite shabby so it encourages me to continue as I can emulate this condition quite easily.   :}

Hi Ken,
I did encounter the same problem with the crane. I added a long pin that goes from the centre of the cradle down into the hull. The pin is lifted upwards by a few millimeters by a soft spring. I attached a tiny magnet on the lower end of the pin and mounted a reed contact beside it. When the boom hits the cradle it pushes the pin down and the magnet opens the reed contact and interrupts the power to the turn motor. When you lift the boom the pin lifts upwards by a couple of millimeters and the reed contact closes the connection to the turn motor. Works perfect.

What a smart solution. I agree that a switch Must be put in rotating circuit to prevent the crane bashing it's way across the boat when it's too low.

Went out before breakfast to check on setting glue.  How keen is that then !!.  The pillar is now secure so I can experiment with the upwards pushing forces I am designing.

Not sure if I shall bother with the hook going up and down as the weight on the end wouldn't be heavy enough to drag it downwards as a free-fall type of mechanism. we'll see how it goes.

That will be super, Channel. It's only the above waterline locations of all the objects that I was after.  My stick-on transfers are missing so I need to know what labels and signs are on board so that I can reproduce them on my printer.  Very kind of you. I hope she's in dock.

You might be amazed by her  'used'  condition.

thank you

Back out to the workshop after an early breakfast  (well it is the first day of spring !!) and started on the crane.

It's glued down tight to the (as yet unglued) deck so I've fitted the turning drive shaft and lower gear wheel. I have a bar running through and up to push the lever arm of the boom.

It now swivels and raises the boom by hand.   :}   The picture give you an idea of the layout.  Also shown is the secret of the lifting hatch covers.  %)  Simple is best.

The black tape under the hatches contains lead weights to bring them down on their return as there is no reverse drive here.

Here is a close up of the lower crane drive system.  As only the white part at the top turns I made a shaft to run up through and connect to it.  The drive gear has been glued on to the bottom end and will connect to the motor.

With regards to the motor, I am using a modified servo.  I've spent the afternoon modifying two servos by removing their stops to allow them to continuously rotate.  Details follow when they are working.

The white box below this contains the R/X and when the deck is fitted it will be at it's highest point for better reception.

I've just noticed that the Hook wire will also be travelling up through this pipe so I hope it doesn't get tangle up.  %)

Titanic  five & a half feet long

Hi Ken
is this Titanic a model kit or are you making it from scratch? It's not the 1/144 Semi is it?

Hi Mike

Than you for your interest. Titanic was made from scratch totally, as the scale I chose was 1:175. By using pictures and small plastic models, I translated the scales to be able to construct the shapes I wanted.

I have a considerable pile of literature and information and my plan is to make another one  (better ??   they all say that)  as the old version has accumulative faults that can no longer be altered.

cheers

A pleasant weekend spent fitting the railings to the stern. It's not as easy as it looks !!  That's some stiff wire there.   %)

Anyway, we got there in the end and here's the result before painting.

The glue had dried on the servo crane drive box so it was onwards and upwards. Here is the line-up of the components. I have been making brackets and bearings all day and still not quite come up with the ideal fitting.

Once it's glued under the deck then working on it will be a nightmare so I have to think of removable servos and motors, should the need arise. I am getting there but I have nothing to show yet.

This is the second box as the original was the wrong size when it came to fitting out.   :embarrassed:

Still working on the controls for the crane.

I was in the garden for a sun bathe and a cup of tea when this flew in to see how I was getting on.    :-))

It does look like a Grouse doesn't it.  I wouldn't know of course, being too young.

Two weeks later and the moving parts are all electrified.   8)

I've made a short film to show all the moving bits together and the deck is now glued down.  ooh er !!!   I'm committed now, so if anything breaks or is wrong then I've had it.   :}

Here you go. Please remember I'm filming with one hand and controlling an R/C with the other, so smooooth is out the window.

Hi Ken

I enjoyed the video - but now I'm getting strange urges for keyboard music O0
I might try the eight minutes of it on your Boston Typhoon build next .....

(for anyone who hasn't seen it)
btw Ken I've finally decided I can't afford the Mountfleet kit. <:( (my house needs some work)
