What colour for type 42 destroyer ?
« on: November 28, 2011, 08:59:31 pm »

Hi Gents ,
I am building a Type 42  destroyer , batch 3, HMS Manchester form the fleetscale hull and plans , but I am not sure what greys to use , looking at pictures it seems that the decks are a darker grey than the hull and superstructure, so what colour would be OK to use on the hull and superstructure that is available as a car-spray in a can ? dove grey ?

Regards Paul.

Hi Paul

Best bet would be to speak to White Ensign Models, they will explain the proper colour scheme and provide the paints for all warships past and present...

fleetscale sell the correct paint for all RN ships from 1968 onwards - called light weatherworks grey - it is the same stuff
used by the Navy but they decant it into 500ml cans and it is suitable for brush or airbrush ( airbrush thin with 50/50 white spirit)
compared with the little tinlets it is as cheap as chips - 500 ml has done one frigate and and I am about to do another and I will
still have more than halft the tin left.

The BS number is BS381-676 Light Weatherworks Grey, and can also be sourced from any specialist paint supplier. Humbrols best equivalent is 127 Satin US Ghost Grey. For decks a dark grey..Humbrol 67 Tank Grey if fresh out of refit, weathering down to Humbrol 27 Sea Grey as it ages. Neither of these are available in spray unfortunately. Unsure of an automotive spray colour for the decks though.

Looking at your HMS York, I tend to agree with your use of Humbrol 129 instead of 127. The decks can be darker when fresh out of refit, and as shown as they get exposed to the sun.

Hi Again ,
Does anyone know what is under the cover on the side of the deck , when uncovered they look like some kind of refueling arm that could be extended ?

Paul.

At a guess and looking at the position I'd venture that it's a stowed companion way.
