Futaba up-grade to 2.4
« on: November 29, 2011, 04:57:14 pm »

Any one know if it's possible with this Challenger, maybe about 20years old.
Looks like the RF board is separate, connected with a five way plug.

Any ideas anyone???

Yes. I converted my Dad's old Challenger set with a DIY Corona 2.4ghz board. Works great!

I had to cut one track for the PPM and remove a link for the +v power. I used a DPST toggle switch to change over from 35mhz or 2.4ghz, although the 35mhz doesn't really get used at all now.

The conversion will be easier if you don't want the use of both tuners, as you can just unplug the tuner on the left, and solder in the module to the pins.

I believe the FRSky stuff has a slight edge on Corona, and is probably a better choice if you're operating very large or fast models. I've been extremely happy with the performance of the two sets I've converted with Corona equipment, zero glitches and what a luxury not having to worry about frequencies. If only it worked underwater......

Thanks for the info.
I've been reading up on this now, and think I'll have a try with my Futaba 6EX, with FrSky V8HT,
