« on: December 03, 2011, 12:34:09 pm »

Good evening all respected Friends..i am willing to clear one doubt from here..i hope none of you may answer, because of the anger on me..but still i want to clear my doubt once..now i am working on a new fishing trawler, and she will be finished with some ideas from traditional, and international..i saw two crane like structures, protruding from both sides of the trawler..none of my traditional trawlers are not holding these devices..but i want to add those poles like structures on my craft..will some one advice about it, as what is the real purpose of these structures..? once please...

Hi krishna,

Funny you should mention that, I was watching a TV program ( Mighty Ships) a little while ago and it mentioned these "poles" and said they where something to do with stability  but i didn't clearly hear what he said...

They hang weights (anchor shaped) off the end of them to help stability.

they are the "Beams" of beam trawlers....

beam trawlers usually fish for Demersal type fish, and also dredge for Scallops and oysters... with hideous chain netting preceeding the actual nets, and sadly it is a very "dirty" type of fishing which scours the sea beds  and ruins it for other creatures that make their habitat on the sea floor.

see here for demersal fishing.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demersal_fish

It is also a very dangerous method of fishing as the boat has to counter balance the weight of the net strung out on one side with counter balances on the other beam unless it fishes a net from both beams.......on these occasions many a beam trawler has been lost with all hands when a net snags a rock, wreck or other under water obstruction...the ship will "tow itself under" in split seconds, with total loss, and little chance of the crew escaping.

On some boats, the outriggers are used to pull the trawling nets.

On other boats such as longliners, the skipper will drop a paravane from either outrigger to
help stabilize the boat. Sort of like a tightrope walker with a long pole.

This balanced downward pulling force at the end of each outrigger makes the
moving vessel more resistant to heeling forces, and dampens roll

Paravane

Depends on the type of fishing being done.
