Deck Planks?
« on: December 12, 2011, 01:23:17 am »

Hi Folks

I have an old Hales Spraymaster that I am reconfiguring. The front hatch you see has been filled ready for a new covering deck; what is hard to see is there is quite a compond curve there. I am not sure what thickness/width of plank to use nor which wood to choose? I would like a notched Kingplank and between the planks a white caulking line. I realise that thickness width and material will probably make a difference re negotiating the compound curves and thats why I am asking for your advice. I also realise there is more than one way to make that white caulking line, plastic, a second timber - but I don't know the pitfalls.

I looked at Cornwall's site and there was a lot of plank choice but I have nothing to base my choice on. Are there other planking sites too?

Thanks Dave

Dave,

I did an aquarama deck using mahogany and lime.

The mahogany was 5mm x 2mm thick, the lime was I think 1x3mm. I laid the lime on edge so the top stood proud of the deck and so could be sanded back to the curves of the boat.

I was please with the result.

Lovely work - post up a link to the build if there is one and I'll have a read of it.

That really is nice work - and the windshield too.
So where do you but your planks?

I guess you meant Buy - typo?

Cant remember now, it was 7 yrs ago. Guess most decent model shops will have that timber though.

there is a company who sell through ebay called specialised timber , based in herts who sell a good range of veneers in quite a reasonable size of sheet . they arent under the modelling section but in the woodworking / craft areas . its how i buy my own decking / interior timbers for my huntsmans etc .  jon
