RNLI RIB'S- a colour/ paint question
« on: December 12, 2011, 02:32:17 pm »

not sure if this should be posted here on on the painting/ finishing section but does anyone have any idea on the paint  colour for the hypalon tubes on the atlantic class ribs ?

the solid hull is brilliant orange, the hypalon' tubes'  are a different shade of orange.....slighly paler and slightly less orange in colour  - anyone know what colour of paint best suits these 'tubes'

 thanks

I would go for Rover Blaze from Halfords with a Matt lacquer to finish....

With my 1/12 Y-class RIB, I took Russ's advice, used Halfords and the colour is great but is quite shiny without lacquer.

Russ, what brand of Matt lacquer can be used over Halfords spray and Barry's lettering?

In real life, Hypalon does fade a little in UV light with time.

The tubes on the real thing aren't painted - that's the base colour of the material they're made of.

I used to be one of the Dyers responsible for making the fabric for these tubes. There were a couple of different oranges used at different times. One of these was a fluorescent orange (although the fluorescence faded pretty rapidly under prolonged exposure to sunlight). Another was a very bright, but non-fluorescent orange.

From the pics I would guess that this was the fluo. version (although the fluorescence does not show in photos). Humbrol used to do a fluo. orange/red but this was TOO red and TOO fluorescent and would need toning down with a non-fluo, lighter orange.

i have had several  conversations with the engineering dept down at poole ( my companies headquarters building is opposite the RNLI - i love those head office meetings  !!! )- my plans  came from poole too ,

thanks for all the responses,  the colour on the full size boats i know is part of the hypalon manufacturing process, i have many pictures of an 85 and the 75,   and thanks to chris and 6705 Russel and the extra detail from nsa66 i think i am sorted... thanks everyone
