LiPo watch
« on: December 21, 2011, 04:17:30 pm »

Having just moved into LiPos and b**gered one leaving the transmitter switched on tooooooooooooooo long, I decided that I should look after my new drive battery. I bought one of those gizmos with LEDs to tell you when the voltage is low.
The problem was how to use it.
So I've built it into the dashboard of the boat, so the driver can keep an eye on it. The green LEDs change to red when the voltage is low.  They are a bit small to see but if you do a quick drive past it's possible to check, The red lights being a bit brighter than the green.
You can see imediately the voltage is a bit dodgey as they start changing to red under full power.

I won't use lipos in a transmitter for exactly the reason you've pointed out. I use lithium ion cells in my TX, you can run those down to a lower voltage than lipo (2.5v instead of 3 volts), which means on my Robbe FC16 the low voltage alarm kicks in before they go too flat.

You could use the protecter type that reduces the current to your motor when the volts drop. This way you can get your boat back and not have to worry about looking at a display. This of course could also be kept if wished. John.
